Jonathan Gullis has been appointed as minister of school standards.

Former teacher Jonathan Gullis has been appointed the new school standards minister, in the latest shake-up at the Department for Education.

Mr Gullis was announced as one of the new arrivals at the department along with Kelly Tolhurst and new education secretary Kit Malthouse.

Ms Tolhurst was announced as a minister of state and Mr Gullis as parliamentary under-secretary of state, but their briefs had not been revealed.

However, Mr Gullis’ LinkedIn profile has been updated to say he has been appointed minister for school standards from this month. Tes has now had this confirmed.

Mr Gullis, who is a former teacher, served on the Commons Education Select Committee until last September when he was made parliamentary private secretary to the secretary of state for Northern Ireland.

The privately educated MP has previously spoken strongly in favour of allowing more grammar schools to open.

The latest ministerial appointments come after 12 months of high turnover in Sanctuary Buildings.

Kit Malthouse was named education secretary by prime minister Liz Truss last week and is the fifth person to hold the role since September 2021.

Just over a year ago, Gavin Williamson lost his post as education secretary in a reshuffle that also saw long-standing schools minister Nick Gibb removed.

Since then, the education secretary’s job has been held by Nadhim Zahawi, Michelle Donelan, James Cleverly and now Mr Malthouse.

Over the past 12 months, the schools minister’s role has been held by both Robin Walker and Will Quince before this latest reshuffle.
