The Scottish programme for the world’s largest free film festival - aimed at all schools and teachers - is open.
Education charity Into Film Scotland is offering hundreds of free screenings and events in cinemas and “extraordinary” venues across Scotland from November 8-29. All films will be accompanied by guides and resources designed to align with the curriculum.
The festival aims to be “accessible to as many young people throughout Scotland as possible”, and includes screenings for people with various additional needs. There will be autism-friendly screenings and events and “more screenings than ever” for hearing-impaired pupils.
It also incorporates a film review writing competition for pupils.
The Scottish arm of the festival will open this year on Friday 8 November at Edinburgh Zoo with a screening of animated film Kensuke’s Kingdom, based on the book by Michael Morpurgo. This will be hosted by young, Scottish actor Aaron MacGregor who voices the main character, Michael, and will take part in a Q&A.
Festival events across Scotland include:
- A screening of Orkney-set The Outrun followed by a careers panel with some of the Scotland-based crew (Glasgow).
- A Scots language screening of Julia Donaldson’s Room on the Broom for younger pupils (Glasgow).
- Mobile cinema special screenings on the Orkney islands of Westray, Sanday and Stronsay.
- Screenings for younger pupils of Inside Out 2 for World Kindness Day; Despicable Me 4; Robot Dreams; The Garfield Movie; and The Wild Robot.
- For older students, highlights include: Back to Black; The Fall Guy; A Quiet Place: Part One, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, The Lavender Hill Mob and Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger.
- Documentaries include: To The End; Is There Anybody Out There?; Food Inc. 2; All That Breathes; Wilding; and Copa 71.
Free bookings can be made on the Into Film website on a first-come, first-served basis.
