Lothian MSP Miles Briggs has been named as the Scottish Conservatives’ shadow education secretary.

Mr Briggs replaces Liam Kerr, who takes on the role of shadow justice secretary, as the new Scottish Conservative leader, Russell Findlay, today unveiled his shadow ministerial team.

The new party leader said his line-up would “stand up for everyone who feels disillusioned with the state of politics and the fringe obsessions of the Scottish Parliament”.

He said his team would fight to regain voters’ trust by displaying common sense on “bread-and-butter issues” and only making promises they can keep.

Mr Briggs, who was first elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2016, was educated at Auchtergaven Primary School in Bankfoot, near Perth, and at Perth Grammar School and Robert Gordon University, in Aberdeen.

He has also served as health and sport spokesperson for his party and as chief whip.

In a 2023 interview with The Times, Mr Briggs talked about his father’s alcoholism and its effect on his childhood, as part of a campaign to challenge stigma.

Speaking to Holyrood magazine in 2018, he said that at school he was voted “most likely to be a politician”.
