The membership of the new Commons Education Select Committee has been confirmed today.
The House of Commons has formally appointed the MPs who will sit on the committee, which scrutinises the work of the Department for Education through inquiries and hearings.
The full appointments comes after former shadow children’s minister Helen Hayes was elected as chair in September.
Individual nominees put forward by political parties were agreed in the House of Commons following a committee of selection meeting.
The committee, which covers topics including schools and the early years, is now formed of a majority of Labour MPs following the party’s general election victory.
While this reflects the number of elected MPs in parliament, the precise number of MPs per party is negotiated between the party whips through the committee of selection meeting.
Details of meetings and the committee’s forward programme will be announced in due course, the House of Commons has said.
