Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton rounded on outgoing first minister Nicola Sturgeon’s education record at the weekend.
Mr Cole-Hamilton said at his party’s conference in Dundee that a lack of progress in closing literacy and numeracy attainment gaps meant that “a whole generation of children and young people have been failed by [Sturgeon’s] government”.
But what are his own party’s priorities for education?
Here are Mr Cole-Hamilton’s messages to his party faithful on what the Lib Dems would do for education:
1. The party “would always pay our teachers what they deserve, and reverse the explosion of temporary and zero-hours contracts”.
2. “Make our classrooms an inviting place to teach again by tackling violence in our schools.”
3. Introduce a ”nursery premium for children in deprived areas”.
4. ”Scrap national testing and the pressure it puts on kids and staff.”
5. “Introduce a national legal entitlement to youth work for every young person in Scotland.”
6. Put more mental health counsellors in schools, which Mr Cole-Hamilton suggested could be done by reversing cuts to mental health budgets.
7. Re-establish Erasmus along similar lines to what has taken place in Wales.
Mr Cole-Hamilton, who addressed the Liberal Democrat conference in Dundee on Saturday, said: “As liberals, we know that growth, development, innovation all flow from education - from our schools, our colleges and our world-class universities.”
The Liberal Democrats were last in power in Scotland as part of the coalition with Labour between 1999 and 2007. Mr Cole-Hamilton said that the SNP was “on the wane” and added: “Make no mistake, when they lose power, the Scottish Liberal Democrats will be part of what’s next.”
