Former children’s minister Will Quince has been appointed to the schools brief as part of the latest shake-up at the Department for Education.
Mr Quince was reappointed to the DfE last week, a day after he resigned saying that he had been given “repeated assurances” that were later found to be inaccurate on the scandal involving fellow Conservative MP Chris Pincher.
He will now take on the role of schools minister previously held by Robin Walker, who also resigned last week after losing confidence in prime minister Boris Johnson.
Former teacher Brendan Clarke-Smith, who was also appointed last week, has become children’s minister.
Will Quince promoted to schools minister at the DfE
The MPs will serve at the DfE under new education secretary James Cleverly, who became the third education secretary in as many days last week during the row over Mr Johnson’s premiership. It was announced last night that Andrea Jenkyns would take on the skills, further education and higher education ministerial brief.
The news comes just over a week before the consultation on the government’s SEND review closes, on 22 July.
Mr Quince played a major role in the review in his position as children’s minister.
His new position is a promotion, as he is now a “minister of state” rather than a parliamentary under-secretary of state, as he was previously.
