More than 190,000 pupils worldwide have received their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) exam results today, with students in the UK beating the global average by over four points.

The IB said the 5,041 UK students who sat the DP scored an average of 34.67 from a maximum possible total of 45. This compared with a global average of 30.32 secured by 187,826 students.

The UK score is exactly the same as last year but the global average is slightly better, up from 30.24.

UK students also scored an average of 5.5 per exam sat, compared with 4.85 worldwide, and secured an impressive 94.57 per cent pass rate, compared with 80 per cent for the rest of the world.

The scores for UK students were secured by 103 schools, from a total of 3,323 worldwide.

Olli-Pekka Heinonen, director general of the International Baccalaureate, congratulated students worldwide on their results and wished them well for their future.

“I am delighted to see so many of them moving confidently on to the next chapter of their lives equipped with the future-ready skills and compassion that define IB learners,” he said.

The IB also revealed the total overall figure of 192,867 students receiving DP results was a 7.2 per cent increase on the number who sat the exam series last year.

Once again there was no data on the number of students who scored a maximum of 45 marks, as the IB announced it would stop publishing this data point last year.

What is the International Baccalaureate?

Established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1968, the IB is a model of study for those aged 3-19 now run by director general Olli-Pekka Heinonen.

The Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-Related Programme (CRP) offer alternative qualifications to the English A-level and vocational equivalents.
