There has been a big increase in the number of students receiving results for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-Related Programme (CP) for the November 2024 session.

Some 21,894 students received their results for the two-year DP and CP courses (including 215 in the UK), up 7.4 per cent on the 20,385 recorded in 2023.

The global average DP score for the November 2024 session is 29.2 points, compared with 29.06 per cent for November 2023. The average DP score for UK-based students in 2024 was 29.5 (30.09 per cent in 2023).

Average grade rises slightly

The DP average grade in 2024 was 4.7 (up slightly from 4.62 in 2023); while it was 4.3 for UK-based students (4.45 in 2023).

The global DP pass rate was 72.5 per cent (71.93 per cent in 2023). For UK students it was 68.6 per cent (75 per cent in 2023)

Some 1,766 students received 40-plus points globally, including 11 in the UK.

As of May 2023, the IB discontinued the publication of data highlighting the number of students achieving the highest marks (45 data points) to discourage comparisons between students and schools.

The DP and CP offer alternative qualifications to English A levels and their vocational equivalents.

The DP gives students what is described as “world-class preparation for higher education and a lifetime of opportunity”, while the CP is for students aged 16-19 who are “professionally oriented to gain lifelong skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, social responsibility and a sense of individual purpose”.

Olli-Pekka Heinonen, director general of the IB, said of this week’s IB results: “It has been an especially trying year for young learners around the world, but these results demonstrate how they have committed themselves to achieving despite it all.

“I am proud to know that such a talented and accomplished cohort of students will be going on to help build the more peaceful world that we hope to achieve through the IB.”

Millions of IB alumni

This week’s IB graduates join more than 2.3 million alumni and lifelong learners across 156 countries worldwide. There are 1,431 IB World Schools including 57 in the UK.

Established in Switzerland in 1968, the IB is a model of study for those aged 3-19.
