This week on the Tes News podcast, the team discuss Department for Education data published this week revealing yet another “catastrophic” shortfall in the number of students recruited to train as teachers in the current academic year.

This year, the government missed its target for recruitment of secondary teacher trainees by 50 per cent - an even greater shortfall than last year.

The data - which shows that just 13,102 trainees were recruited on to courses this year out of the 26,360 the government said were needed - was once again described as “catastrophic” and “even worse than last year” by heads’ leaders.

Join Tes’ deputy news editor John Roberts and senior reporter Matilda Martin, alongside special guest Jack Worth, school workforce lead at the National Foundation for Educational Research, as they discuss how we got here and what happens next.
