Whether it’s a post-Sats party with the kids or just a windows-down, wind-in-the-hair, music-blasting drive home that you’ve got in mind, it’s impossible to let the end of the Key Stage 2 Sats week go without some proper music to help you wave a cheery goodbye to the tests and all the drudgery that goes with them.
So now, in my best Tony Blackburn voice (it was actually Mark Goodier in my day), here are the end-of-Sats week charts, pop pickers:
5. ‘I’m Free’ - The Soup Dragons
Originally by The Rolling Stones and covered by The Soup Dragons in 1990, this is perfect for a sing-a-long: “I’m free to do what I want any old time” you can shout, with a more creative, less restrictive curriculum in mind. And as rehearsals begin for the all-important Year 6 leavers’ production, lines like “I’m free to sing my song though it gets out of time” couldn’t be more pertinent.
4. Ghostwriter - RJD2
Not only is this instrumental wonder a perfect start-of-the-summer song, its title won’t be lost on Year 6 teachers who have grappled with the exact definition of “independent writing”. At least we can all agree that teachers shouldn’t ghostwrite their children’s writing work over the next few weeks.
3. Just a Test* - Beastie Boys
This contains an important message for the boys and girls: “As long as I learn I will make mistakes... Don’t worry your mind, When you give it your best, One two one two this is just a test”. Even after the tests are over, everyone will need that reminder that they did their best and that in the end, it’s only a test and that they are more than a score.
2. Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
The tests are over, nothing else can be done to change the outcomes; what better than a little blind optimism to help you through the next few weeks? As the summer creeps closer teachers will get up, smile with the rising sun and think, “Don’t worry ‘bout a thing, ‘cause every little thing gonna be alright”, before heading off to school to strike that fine balance between maintaining a routine but allowing a little of that end-of-school-year feeling to creep in.
1. Celebration - Kool and the Gang
In at number one - no wedding would be complete without it - it’s ‘Celebration’ by Kool and the Gang. And as many Year 6 teachers and children would agree, the end of Sats week is just as worth celebrating as a couple tying the proverbial knot. “There’s a party going on right here”, and while the party won’t quite last a year, we might as well all enjoy the weekend and the imminent holiday when it arrives.
Let us know the songs you’ll be listening to, to celebrate the end of Sats week.
