A teacher who was sentenced to a year in prison after having a sexual relationship with a sixth former has been banned from teaching for life.

Matthew Dawson, 38, pleaded guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court in August 2016 to an offence of “sexual activity with a female aged 13-17 years old, without reasonable belief that she was 18 years old and by abuse of position of trust”.

Mr Dawson, who taught at SWB Academy in Wolverhampton, was also ordered to sign the sex-offenders register for 10 years.

The relationship with the 17-year-old lasted for about six months, during which time Mr Dawson had been having “difficulties”, according to a report from the Teaching Regulation Agency.

The report says he had a “previously good history”.

Decision maker Dawn Dandy said in the report that Mr Dawson would now be banned from teaching indefinitely.

She said: “Teachers uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school, by treating pupils with dignity, building relationships rooted in mutual respect, and at all times observing proper boundaries appropriate to a teacher’s professional position.

“In view of the seriousness of the allegation…I have decided that Mr Dawson shall not be entitled to apply for restoration of his eligibility to teach.”

Mr Dawson has a right to appeal the panel’s decision in the High Court within 28 days of the date of his order.
