It is “essential” schools are given data showing local Covid-19 infection rates when pupils return in September, teachers have said.

As well as “securing trust and confidence of teachers and parents”, this will ensure schools can make “appropriately planned arrangements in the event of a local spike”, according to the NASUWT teaching union.

In a letter to the education secretary Gavin Williamson, NASUWT general secretary Patrick Roach said: “With the prospect of all children returning to schools in September, securing trust and confidence of teachers and parents will be critical to securing a successful reopening.

“This will require all schools to have access to data about Covid-19 infection rates in their local areas.

“We believe that it is essential that information sharing with schools is essential if schools are to make appropriately planned arrangements in the event of a local spike in Covid-19 infections (including arrangements for communicating with parents and pupils).”
