New shoes? Check. Newly stocked pencil case? Check. Emergency doughnuts as comfort food? Check. The return to school after the long summer holidays can be an emotional time. So it was perhaps no surprise that social media today fizzed with comments.

Here are some we liked:

Amid fears for modern languages teaching, the Doctor attempted to motivate us by resorting to French:

#FirstDayofSchool?
Don’t worry. You’ve got this.

And of course, it was vital to make sure the new Year 7s - and everyone else - felt welcome:

A warm welcome to our new Yr 7s and also our new students throughout other year groups too. Hope you all have a fab day! #firstdayofschool

In Barry, South Wales, pupils made an energetic start (note the “growth mindset” paperwork on the children’s desks):

#year5 #backtoschool - the only way to start Year 5 is the 5-a-day way. @5adayfitness @stuartswann @StStmargaretsrc pic.twitter.com/iPUg5RAogs

One teacher could be accused of over-sharing, even though it was easy to sympathise:

Tough first day back, must get my bladder re-trained to school times again! #teacherproblems

But TES columnist Michael Tidd was the one to really sum up the sheer emotion of the back-to-school experience:

Must. Not. Cry.#backtoschool

Obviously, important grooming decisions had to be made:

#BackToSchool tomorrow. The big planning decision has been made: the beard stays!

And, thankfully the Independent Schools Council was on hand to keep us informed about all the jargon:

It’s #firstdayofschool. Many ISC schools continue to call the first school term ‘Michaelmas’: https://t.co/AHHmFHQtff
