Ofsted annual private income doubles in decade to £33m
But annual report shows this will not compensate for drop in Ofsted’s government funding from £185m to £135m over the same period
Ofsted’s private income is set to more than double in the space of a decade, its new annual report shows.
Tables show that the inspectorate’s income has increased from £16 million in 2010-11 to an expected income of £33 million in 2020-21.
This is money the inspectorate earns separately from its public funding from the government.

Ofsted’s annual report says its income consists mainly of “registration and annual fees from social care and early years providers”.
It adds: “We also receive income for inspections of independent schools, and from other government departments for delivering specific pieces of inspection activity.”
But the report also notes that Ofsted’s core public funding has fallen from £185 million in 2010-11 to £135 million in 2020-21. This is a reduction of £50 million, or 27 per cent before taking account of inflation.
