This Reading Comprehension worksheet is suitable for higher elementary to proficient ESL learners or native English speakers. The text describes the origins and history of the Olympic Games, from the ancient Olympia to their revival in the late 19th century.
After carefully reading the text, students are required to complete some comprehension exercises including comprehension questions, a gap filling exercise and True or False exercises. The text can be used for vocabulary building purposes. This handout can be completed in class or assigned for homework.
The PowerPoint is 55 pages long. It covers the history of trains from the first vehicle to be pulled on rails over 200 years ago; steam trains; the locomotive; the Rocket; diesel trains, through to the modern electric trains of today.
It is written in the style of a non-fiction book, with a contents page, index and glossary.
It would be suitable for upper KS1 or lower KS2 and can be used in a history topic or as a non-fiction book in English.
A timeline covering suggested topics from the KS1 and KS2 History National Curriculum all on one sheet of A4. Ideal for sticking into children’s books or displaying in the classroom. All images located from Google.
A word document version is included in case you want to add/edit some events, particularly for the local enquiry area in the NC. I appreciate it may look a little squashed on one sheet but hopefully it is concise enough! Let me know what you think or how else you might present the timeline information.
Olympic History Class Play (one of collection of 10 scripts)
This assembly, written by Sue Russell, covers the history of the Olympics, starting with its origins in Ancient Greece. All the host nations are presented in a fun coverage of both events and stars.
Featuring the 18 countries that have so far hosted the Olympic Games, plus Brazil (2016 host), each gives a brief summary of their 'contribution' to the Games' history so far.
Sample Text:
1. Simply the Best - Tina Turner
(Children file in, waving flags triumphantly)
Coubertin: Good morning and welcome to our class play on The History of the Olympics - when nations compete against each other, in the most sporting manner.
(19 nations stand up with flags, cheering loudly)
(Zeus plus 3 Ancient Greeks stride onto stage, folding their arms in front of them, taking up an aggressive stance)
Coubertin: ‘Course, it wasn't always like that. Back in 776 BC it was only athletes from across Ancient Greece who competed.
Zeus: In my honor!
Sostratos: 5 days
Leonidas: 7 events
Kallipateira: (Scowling) And no women!
Coubertin: Ah! The good old days! When men were men, and women were women!
Kallipateira: I thought you were here to represent the Modern Olympics?
Coubertin: Indeed I am. And you're about to see just how many changes took place over the years
Zeus: Not necessarily for the better! (Looking around) I can't see any of this lot paying me homage! And what are those women doing, mingling with the men athletes?
Coubertin: (In disgust) They're competing too!

There are two main options with a timeline that focuses on flight and the development of planes, or flight, planes, and space travel.
The timeline has four differentiated options so that you can meet the needs of your students or there is the option to make a foldable version which is a mini-book that could be taped into the students’ books or they could take it home.
What’s included?

Differentiated with simple or detailed captions, and the easiest version has the photos and captions already together so students need to match it to the date, and the most difficult level students need to match the photo to the caption and write in the date
Interactive foldable with visual step-by-step instructions
Logic-style clue cards to solve the order of the timeline
