EAL Vocabulary helps children with very little English to increase their vocabulary and to learn the basic words they need in their everyday lives. The themes covered are clothes, mealtimes and things in the classroom. The words used are those suggested to us by EAL and EFL teachers. In addition to the worksheets, there are a number of coloured game sheets which can be used for many language games. Previously available through Easylearn.

My notes

This is Bingo with keywords from across the curriculum, aimed at KS3 (years 7, 8 and 9). I have used this activity with EAL Learners as start of a lesson, and it was a huge success! Students can keep the answer sheet for future reference.

Keywords are taken from the National Curriculum subjects such as English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art & DT, R.E, Drama and P.E.

Playing Instructions:
Print out the first slide (2 bingo cards), cut in half, and give a sheet to each player. (e.g Print 5 copies of the first slide for 10 players)

With the keywords, write these down and put into a bag. Call the definition and the keyword out for each ticket that you pull out. The player to get four in a row is the first winner and the ultimate winner is the player with a full house.

Each player should have a copy of the 2nd slide that has the definitions and the keywords. The pupil ticks the keywords as they are read out by the caller to keep track. This is also a good reference for them to keep as they build up key vocabulary.

Download and adapt this PPT for your subject!

Using visual cues such as colour backgrounds and visual spelling/reading methods, the booklet is ideal for students who struggle to read due to an additional need such as dyslexia.

The booklet is divided into Chracter, Plot, Themes and Key Scene Sections, with opportunity to practice the reading and spelling of key vocabulary using colour codes.

At the end of the booklet there is an assessment section that includes a key word spelling activity.

You will receive a copy of the PDF in peach, orange and yellow so that you can choose whichever booklet background is suited to the student’s preference.

The booklet is also suitable for ESL learners.

Essential daily verbs in flashcards for easy practice. Each flashcard has a picture to assist students who are not able to read yet. These can be used by the teacher to point to the picture so the students understands what to do.

The first 3 units of EAL survival vocabulary. These activities are designed to help new arrivals with EAL settle in. They are speaking and listening activities.

A gothic creative writing worksheet suitable for EAL or SEND students. It starts with a cloze exercise where students fill in the gaps to create their own descriptive piece. It also offers adjective and vocabulary practice where students choose adjectives to describe a gothic picture.

Perfect resource for low prior attainers (LPAs) or students with Special Edcational Needs (SEN) or students with English as an Additional Language.

A Christmas Carol is a visual vocabulary bank for EAL students level A (New to English). It provides students with a picture dictionary of words associated with Christmas and practice opportunities to aid students’ understanding and put the novella into context. Having learnt and practised the keywords, students are introduced to grammar and sentence structure needed to write simple sentences describing rooms (link to Stave Three).

This is a set of posters with vocabulary useful in all science topics. There are names of equipment and classroom furniture as well as units of measurement. I have these up in my lab as most of my pupils are EAL.

The booklet features practice in the following areas:

This ‘Forgetful Santa’ booklet aims to support vocabulary acquisition of everyday items such as hats, boots, gloves as well as different colours.
The children go through the booklet and identify what Santa has forgotten, and fill in the blanks for the sentence “Santa has forgotten his…” The final page includes extra fill in the blank sentences about Santa as well as space for children to experience writing their own sentences about Santa.

This includes a word bank to support the children to work independently. I have used this booklet when there is no TA timetabled for my lesson, or as a starter for children with SEN or EAL while I deliver the input of the main lesson before going to support these children with their work.

It has been created so that all you need to do is print the document, and then arrange it in the order of the numbers on the bottom of the page. It is an easy booklet to collate, and then just slip the word bank within in for safe keeping.
