AQA A level Biology - maths 'Cluedo'

(0)

A ‘cluedo’ style activity, 12 exam-style questions and the possibility to find 12 clues to find who did it, with what weapon in what room! Suitable for use with both year 12 and year 13 students.

I run the activity as an independent one, I cut up the markscheme (with examiners report) and put them at the side of the room. Once pupils have self-marked they come and show me, and I give them a ‘clue’ (a cluedo-style person / weapon / room, I number them 1-12 on the back so I can show the same one for each question to prevent cheating).

They then cross off the person / weapon / room they have just seen until they are left with the ones you picked out at the start of the lesson, at the end of the 12 questions. I then have a little prize (merits / stickers / sweets) for the first person to finish. You can, however, adapt it how you would like!

Hess' Law Cluedo

Cluedo to help spice up revision of Hess' Law! Pupils love it, it takes approx 45 mins for the quickest students to complete. It also provides a useful resource to take home for exam preparation. Designed for OCR B specification. I pick out a weapon, room and suspect at the start, then show pupils a clue every time they reach a checkpoint with all questions correct. They can then cross suspects, rooms and weapons off their list at the front of their booklets as they work through.

You can, however, adapt it how you would like!

This was designed for my very able KS3 group but would also suit a low-mid ability KS4 group (approx. 40 mins - 1 hour length depending on ability). Separate resource available for a high ability KS4 group.

Edexcel C2.1 star challenge

(0)
A 'star challenge' revision activity with questions getting progressively harder. Students have free choice of what questions they answer, with one star questions being worth 1 mark, up to four star questions that are worth 4 marks (and are touching on A-level in difficulty). This was designed for my triple students, however if using with a lower ability set you can always leave out the four star questions. I gave a small prize to the student with the most points at the end, with the idea being that the four star questions are worth more points, but are harder and therefore take longer to answer. The students will therefore end up working at their relevant difficulty level.

Resource includes questions adapted from module 1 of the Edexcel textbook (atomic structure and the periodic table), answer sheets for the students and all answers. I printed the questions onto different colour card for the different difficulties, and then laminated them.

Alien Adaptations with built in progress checks

This was a fun activity that I did on my PGCE course. I have recently adjusted it and used it in a lesson observation (for which it was graded 'outstanding').

This is a lesson all about extending pupils' knowledge of adaptations. Most pupils will recognise adaptations from primary school, but every single student was able to progress in this lesson. It links biology to physics, and gets them to think of adaptations that animals in completely different scenarios will possibly have. It also involves team work and increases their verbal literacy skills.

The PowerPoint is fairly self explanatory, any further points are in the 'notes' section at the bottom of the slides.
The resources in this pack include everything you need except materials to actually make the aliens (plastic bottles, straws, clingfilm, bubblewrap, pens etc. I would recommend giving different groups different materials so they can trade resources. You can include a competition to see which group manages to gain the greatest amount of money throughout the task, and award money for good teamwork).

Covering key language for the examinations on: difference in means, overlap, different stats tests, null hypotheses, p values, probability and chance.

This is a summary sheet, it assumes students are already aware of how to choose which stats test to use.
