Because reproduction is taught from earlier grades, this lesson follows on from a Q&A lesson which begins the term. There is a tutorial of sexual and asexual reproduction and a quirky Youtube video to recap. Then, a slight change of pace in a group activity tracing the inherited features in the Simpson family. The lesson finishes up with questions on advantages and disadvantages of sexual and asexual reproduction.

Students are presented with 2 full colour hi-res laminated pages of images of bacteria. Their task is to identify the type of bacteria by its shape, using the key worksheet provided. Also, other features like flagella and capsules are visible and can be listed. The classes I have used this with are really engrossed in the morphology and have many relevant discussion questions.Also provided are 5 slides with information on selected bacteria, chosen for their social and historical impact and the general knowledge of the students.

I prepared this analogy for a low ability grade 9 class who required a lot of visual aids and animated involvement from myself. The analogy of the 3 types of radioactive decay centres around a woman (my real life aunt) carrying her shopping from the mall to the car.... 3 different events to aid in representing alpha, beta and gamma radiation with a summary of the three at the end which I printed off as a handout. Hope its useful :)

Each of the cards has a revision question relating to an important concept from the topic. Students are positioned around the room with cards, each with a question, and a post-it note with the answer that only they can see. A second student sits opposite and has 2 minutes to answer the question. If they get it right they get a point. After 2 minutes the teacher rings a bell and the answering student moves to another table while the questioning student remains. Once all the questions have been answered by each student, they swap and repeat the process of 2 minutes per question.

Each student is given a table providing space for information on 5 types of micro-organism involved in disease(minus bacteria). Students are randomly given one expert card each and have to explain the information on their card to another student in a limited time as well as listen to their partner's information (I gave them 4 minutes each). When the time is up, they have to find another person to explain to and learn from. The process goes on until everyone has learned information on all 5 microorganisms.
