Word a Week for a School Year - build vocabulary

(0)
This is a Word a Week to increase pupils’ vocabulary, using relevant pictures, definitions and synonyms. These are picture words, enough for a Word a Week for a school year! It is an easy and effective way to boost a school’s vocabulary. Aimed at KS3, KS4, KS5 or the vocabulary could provide some upper KS2 extension. This resource could have a powerful impact on an entire school’s vocabulary acquisition, if the word a day pictures are added to newsletters or lessons. I’ve made two small free word a day resources available to demonstrate how useful the resource can be, so you can try those out in a classroom. If you like this Word a Week resource, you can buy the complete Word a Day resource for over three years. Alternately, the Word a Day resources can be bought as 3 separate year resources, providing a Word a Day for each of the three years.

Build vocabulary - a picture Word a Day

This is a free sample of a Word a Day resource that I have made with over 600 words. The bought resource provides a big enough word a day collection for 3 and a half school years. There is a related picture and synonym to aid comprehension. I hope it will be a way for whole schools to increase the vocabulary of their pupils, through use in lessons, newsletters or assemblies. Aimed at KS3, KS4 and KS5 but the word a day may also have some application with able pupils in upper KS2.

Global warming lesson -pupils learn about global warming & are supported to write to persuade/inform

Learning outcomes - children learn about global warming and by using the model text, teaching notes and scaffold are able to write their own persuasive and informative texts on global warming. A model global warming persuasive information text provides lots of information, so children will learn about global warming. Teaching notes provide guidance on the features of the text type. Teaching notes also guide discussion of how the writer manages to persuade and inform. This builds the children’s understanding of the text type in order to help pupils write their own persuasive and informative texts on global warming. There is a scaffold frame that can also be used to support independent writing on global warming.

Anglo-Saxons Sutton Hoo Newspaper (template and facts)

This activity gives pupils a clear structure for writing a newspaper about Mrs Pretty’s donation of the Sutton Hoo finds to the British Museum. It also provides all the facts they need to write a really good newspaper article. A task for able upperKS2, and KS3 historians.

Writing and responding to a painting - Mondrian

Writing and responding to the painting ‘Broadway Boogie Woogie’ by Mondrian. It would be useful to look at a version of the image on the whiteboard in class, so that there is better quality of image for discussion, than the image on the worksheet. Visual literacy questions to prompt discussion or writing. There is another TES resource available linked to this, so please check out my other Mondrian resource. There are more resources available at .
