This instant download workbook has been designed to help flute students understand the sequencing of intervals in natural minor and harmonic minor scales. It follows on from our Major Scales Workbook. The booklet is available as a pdf so that it can be screen shared with students during virtual teaching or printed out and used by the student at home. The booklet has been designed so that you can introduce the information one bit at a time and use it either as one lesson or broken down into different parts depending on the time available to you and what best suits your student.
It has been designed to help students understand both Semi Tones and Tones and the sequence that they appear in, in both the Natural Minor and Harmonic Minor Scale.
Hopefully by the end of studying this booklet and playing the games included a student will have an understanding of how a natural minor and harmonic minor scale comes together and will be able to write one out for themselves. My cousin gave the best feedback I could hope for, she said this workbook enabled her to work through the concepts in an organised way and, and this is the good bit, it helped her understand what it is the student does and doesn’t know at this stage. That is so good as teachers, if we can work out what it is our students don’t know we are so much better equipped to help them.
I hope this workbook will help your students to understand scales better, feel more confident with them and therefore be able to play them with more confidence, less tension and maybe even enjoy them a bit more!
Examples of the pages can be seen in the photographs.
Why not add this to your repertoire of teaching tools. Wishing you happy teaching.

Scales can be challenging to learn and not always the most fun.
Available in lots of different designs these Scales Practice Charts have been developed to help students practice and learn their scales. The charts enable teachers to pace the learning to suit their students and break down the learning into smaller chunks, but also vary the practice to keep the momentum going. Once the scales have been learnt use the Challenge it! Cards to test that learning.
These Scales Practice Records are blank for teachers to add the scales that the student in learning. There are multiple designs so students and teachers have lots to choose from.
Use the chart to either put a date, a tick or even a sticker in the relevant box so that the student knows which level they are working on for each scale. The idea being that students can be working on different scales at different levels, with eventually all scales being in the Challenge it! Box.
Starting with writing out the scale, the student takes ownership of the scale by writing it down. The student then moves on to Plat It, Say It with the music, meaning the student should both play the scale on their instrument but also say out loud the notes they are playing, either simultaneously or one after the other. When the student has mastered this section, move them on to Play It, Say It, without the music. The student does the same challenge as before only this time without looking at the music. Once confident with this the student moves on to playing the scale with both slurred and separate patterns. Lastly the student Challenges their knowledge.
The Challenge It! cards have been developed to help you challenge your learning. By challenging our learning we see how well we really know something. If you can play your scales whilst making animal impressions, or changing the standard rhythm, or stamping your feet, then you can be sure that you have really learnt them!
This is an instant download product for you to print at home.
Included are 15 different designs of scale record charts, Challenge It cards for keyboard players, string players and woodwind players. The challenge it cards comes in two different designs each.
