Self Compassion means taking a balanced approach to any negative feelings or experiences that we encounter. Instead of becoming overwhelmed, exaggerate or even suppress our emotions and experiences, self compassion means accepting ourselves – even the parts that are vulnerable and imperfect. Just remember…self esteem is not about learning to love everything about ourselves…it’s about loving ourselves even though there are things that we do not like. If we see self esteem as a destination of perfect self acceptance it will always seem too far away.

Social stories are written to share meaningful and accurate information to define, describe and explain accurate information in a meaningful way to enhance the students social understanding. Social stories are great for increasing a students understanding of socially appropriate behaviours and interactions. This social story explores the concept of “Walking in Lines”. It explores key aspects such as encouraging students to face the front, hands down, walking behind the person in front, use your eyes to watch where you are going and to be quiet. Visual supports are included to enhance the students understanding of the written word. The following Peer Pressure Scenario Cards explores some realistic and relatable peer pressure situations to support little learners explore this topic. There are a total of 20 scenario cards and written as first person to encourage empathy, understanding and compassion. On each card, there is a visual representation of the peer pressure situation, as well as a written narrative explaining what is happening. At the bottom of the scenario card includes a reflective question – “Was I influenced by peer pressure?” Students are then encouraged to answer “Yes” or “No”. As an extension activity there are some additional reflective questions for students to explore. Included in this resource are two paddle pop templates for both the “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” option. This can be utilized for whole class or small group situations to encourage each student to participate.

This is a great way to introduce the concepts of “bucket filling” for the beginning of the year or reminders of self-care and positive and empowering learning environments. The student may require some reflective questioning should they need prompting as to how and why a behaviour may be a bucket filler or a bucket dipper. Sandwich ingredients represent the various strategies to support the student to use self esteem strategies. The following strategies are included: be authentic, eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, good sleep, positive affirmations, list your wins and accomplishments, pamper yourself, favourite music, create a memory box, clean environment, avoid triggers, deep breathing/meditation, set realistic goal and take action and surround yourself with positive people.
