2021 Unseen Poetry model answer for BOTH questions on A London Thoroughfare, 2 AM by Amy Lowell and November Night, Edinburgh by Norman MacCaig
This model essay is designed to hit the requirements for Grade 9 for AQA English Literature Paper 2 (2023 onwards) or Paper 1 (2022 and before). Includes two answers that weaves together language and structure analysis, relevant comparisons how and why the two writers present their poems in relation to describing the city at night.

We look at Of Mice and Men and Chapter Two, with a focus on the relationship between Lennie and George and how Steinbeck introduces the new characters of Crooks, Candy, The Boss and Curley. Additionally, we look at how Steinbeck uses a sense of foreboding to hint at the rest of the plot. An Inspector Calls but with a difference! Students create their own independent writing pieces having studied the play. Students have a choice of activities which are progressively more challenging, but also learn how to use semicolons and colons beforehand to embed into their new writing pieces. An engaging, challenging and differentiated lesson that is useful for both English Literature AND English Language preparation (in terms of descriptive and narrative writing), but particularly useful to use at the end of a unit of work on the play when students are looking for opportunities to use their creativity and show off their writing skills. As we study A Midsummer Night’s Dream we look at the play within a play in Act 5 Scene 1 and how Bottom and the mechanicals present Pyramus and Thisbe to the wedding audience. Students create their own performances of Pyramus and Thisbe before analyzing the comments made by Theseus, Hippolyta and the other characters as they watch and interrupt the actors. Fully differentiated throughout.
