An Inspector Calls but with a difference! Students create their own independent writing pieces having studied the play. Students have a choice of activities which are progressively more challenging, but also learn how to use semicolons and colons beforehand to embed into their new writing pieces. An engaging, challenging and differentiated lesson that is useful for both English Literature AND English Language preparation (in terms of descriptive and narrative writing), but particularly useful to use at the end of a unit of work on the play when students are looking for opportunities to use their creativity and show off their writing skills. As we study A Midsummer Night’s Dream we look at the play within a play in Act 5 Scene 1 and how Bottom and the mechanicals present Pyramus and Thisbe to the wedding audience. Students create their own performances of Pyramus and Thisbe before analyzing the comments made by Theseus, Hippolyta and the other characters as they watch and interrupt the actors. Fully differentiated throughout.

Students look at how Robin Goodfellow or Puck is introduced, at the fairies and the type of character we expect them to be and why, and why Titania and Oberon are introduced to us before we see them on stage. A really useful lesson for students analysing Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and fully differentiated so all students can access and explore key quotes from Act 2 Scene 1.
She Walks in Beauty by Lord Byron, a one hour lesson designed for KS4 students preparing for Eduqas poetry anthology questions or for unseen poetry exam questions for any of the exam boards like AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC. The lesson explores language and structure,in particular how the writer is able to convey a sense of harmony throughout the piece.

We conclude Animal Farm by analysing the second half of Chapter 10 and think about how and why it ends as it does. We look at key quotations and evaluate how the ending makes the reader feel and why Orwell might have intended us to feel this way at the novel’s ending. The Porter came up in a Macbeth exam question in 2019 despite having only a few lines in the play, and yet he is an integral character, acting as comic relief and also having a deeper symbolic meaning. In this detailed lesson we explore how and why Shakespeare presented The Porter and how the character links to the Gunpowder Plot and King James I. We compare the description of setting in both Chapters One and Six in Of Mice and Men and consider how the writer builds up themes in both chapters, so we can make comparisons between the two extracts.
