A lesson that explores the themes, context and characters of the scene from Romeo and Juliet. Students are provided with a clear learning journey that is linked to blooms skills and the assessment objectives from the new spec AQA. The lesson follows a clear structure where students are introduced to the main idea, the theme/character analysis is developed and students then have the opportunity to apply their own skills independently. Learning objectives and activities are clearly differentiated using RAG and stretch and challenge opportunities are in the form of 'Shakespeare Challenge' questions to help encourage students to extend their ideas. This lesson is aimed at KS4 but could be adapted for use with KS3 students. Planned as a double (2 hour lesson) but could easily be split into two separate 1 hour lessons. A full scheme of work is also available in my shop.

Lessons that explore the story of A Christmas Carol while developing KS3 descriptive writing skills. 3 lessons included in this set. This module is ideal to use with students in the Autumn term and the lead up to Christmas as they are able to get the flavour of the text while also developing key GCSE creative writing skills. Designed for the initial teaching of the 2015 poems from the AQA Poems Past and Present Anthology- Conflict & Power cluster. There is PowerPoint for each poem in the cluster and each lesson contains: -a starter activity -context/biographical overview of the poet -and an introduction/initial impressions activity. These lessons serve as an introduction and overview to each poem and an opportunity for students to begin to annotate the poems based on their first impressions. The focus of these lessons are for students to understand the meaning of each poem so they are able to return to each later in the term to annotate in more detail. The aim of these lessons is for students to begin to understand and annotate the poems in their anthologies. Each lesson also includes a poetry SMILE analysis mat for students to use to scaffold their independent analysis and a PEEL writing frame to reflect on their understanding. The PEEL activity is generic so can be adapted to suit your group and the focus of your particular lesson.

A Scheme of Learning document to accompany the SOW that is also available . The scheme of learning details the steps of each lesson: learning objectives, mini and main starter activities, main activity, development and plenary. There is a clear differentiation system with each level highlighted using RAG to clearly show how challenge increases. There is also a column that details how Teaching Assistant support can be used during each lesson. This is an ideal document to accompany the SOW PPTs as it clearly shows the overall learning journey across the module.

A series of lessons on AQA Language Paper 1 Section A. The PPT contains 38 slides that take students through questions 1-4 using an extract from The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. The activities in the lessons include: Exam worded questions Modelled annotation AO breakdowns Modelled paragraphs for each question Peer Assessment- with guided criteria Questioning Planning Grid Timings for each question Planned for high/middle abilty year 10/11 group but easily differentiated for your needs.

A half term’s worth of tasks to accompany a Lord of the Flies module. There are 7 tasks in total. All the tasks are included on a mat that can be stuck in the students books at the beginning of the module- there is space left for students to add a due date for each. Each activity then includes a slide that gives more information about the task set. I tend to use these as a plenary task before setting the homework so all students are clear on the task. Each task also includes an extra ‘challenge’ task to help stretch and challenge the more able. The ppt is fully editable so you can amend the tasks to suit your own groups. I have used versions of this with high, middle and low ability students from years 9-11. As a school we have found these help increase homework completion as both parents and students are clear about what will be set across the half term. Also enables students to catch up easily with homework tasks even if they have missed the lesson where it was set. Lord of the Flies SOW also available in my shop.

2 weeks of lessons to introduce English Language Paper 2 Section A- Writer’s viewpoints and perspectives. The texts are taken from AQA Paper 2 resource booklet (available on AQA website) and are on the theme of conflict: As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning by Laurie Lee I see my wife coming off the field of battle by Tim Dowling The lessons introduce students to the skills and AO’s required for each question and provide students with a clear structure to answer each question. There are also model answers for students to mark and match against the mark scheme. As I am using this with my year 11 students I have interleaved Literature skills by using the poems from the Conflict cluster as starter tasks. The aim of this is to aid students’ revision of the poems but also refresh language analysis skills. The poems link to the themes of the non-fiction texts selected. The aim is for students to spend 5 minutes at the beginning of each lesson revising the poetry skills which can then be applied to the rest of the lesson. These could also be used as ‘unseen’ poetry revision for those that have studied the ‘Romantic’ cluster. Activities aim to build a routine with students that they can apply to their exam. Approaching different texts by following the same steps is important. Activities are aimed to be kept to close timings where indicated to help students build their time management skills for the exam. A lesson that introduces the new specification AQA English language Paper 1. The lesson focuses on an extract from The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Students revise their knowledge of word classes and then consider how the extract describes the narrator’s feelings. There are class models and an example paragraph as well as prompts to help students locate appropriate quotations to support their analysis.

This resource introduces students to the AQA English Language Paper 1 (Explorations in Creative Reading). This pack provides individual lessons that are tailored to each question. The text used is ‘The Return of Sherlock Holmes’. Each lesson is planned for a middle ability group and is easily adaptable to challenge the more able or to support the less able. Each lesson takes students through the assessment objectives required and breaks them down into chunks so make them more accessible to students (stepping stones to success).
