German Greetings and Introductions unit printable games for speaking and reading practice: loop games, a jigsaw puzzle, and an active card game to review basic greetings (Die Begrüßungen auf Deutsch), goodbyes and introducing yourself in German. These activities review vocabulary such as Guten Tag (Hello), Guten Abend (Good evening), Auf Wiedersehen (Goodbye) and Bis später (See you later). Students will also practise asking and answering questions such as Wie geht’s? (How are you?), Wie heißt du? (What’s your name?), Wie alt bist du? (How old are you?), and Wo wohnst du? (Where do you live?). The games are in PDF format.
My German basics resources are made for students beginning German and near beginners in KS2 or early KS3 (Years 5, 6 and 7) and equivalents but may suit others, depending on experience.

LOOP GAMES / “I HAVE…WHO HAS…?”
The six 10-card loop games are coloured differently. If printing in black and white use different coloured card to help keep them separate. Designed for oral practice in small groups, with a student reading out the English word or phrase on their card and others checking if they have the German translation, then reading this out - and so on until the loop is completed.
JIGSAW PUZZLE
A 16-piece triangle puzzle. Print, laminate, and cut. Students must arrange the puzzle pieces so that English vocabulary is placed beside the matching German translations on other pieces, forming a large triangle.
ACTIVE CARD GAME
A fun game to get students moving around the classroom, speaking German to each other. 18 identical pairs of cards form a complete 36-card set. Print and laminate the cards. Students circulate, asking and answering questions in German about name, age, and where they live, in whatever order they wish. Students’ responses should be based on the information on their card. Without looking at each other’s card, students try to find the player whose card matches their own.
To make the small number of locations printed on the cards more relevant to students, I have included 3 versions: Canada / US, UK, Australia / NZ. All versions include some German locations.
VOCABULARY SUPPORT CARD
Use this to support certain students, groups or classes to play the games.

You can use these as ordinary task cards but a fun whole class game of Scoot works really well:
HOW TO SET UP AND PLAY “SCOOT!”:
Print and cut the 40 numbered cards. There’s a set with English instructions and a set with French instructions, which you might want to use for older, more able or more experienced students. Two of the cards feature vocabulary that is different in Canada, therefore these two are repeated in a Canadian version at the end of the file.
Consider laminating cards if you wish to use again.
If playing Scoot, place or stick the cards on desks so that all students can answer one at a time.
Give students a 1-page or 2-page blank answer grid. Consider mixed ability pairs and / or supplying the Christmas vocabulary support sheet for differentiation.
Set a timer so that students have 30 seconds to sit and answer a card before scooting to the next one. All students move at the same time when the allotted time is done. You can call “Scoot!” or perhaps “Allez!” each time. Ensure you explain to students in which direction they should move.
When students have answered all cards, mark together. An answer key is included.
Even if you don’t have 40 students, you can still use all cards if you have a big enough space to arrange them. However, if you only want the same number of cards as you have students, you can remove some of the later cards. It’s also possible to remove cards you feel might be too hard for your students.
Substitute cards you don’t wish to use with the included Pause Cards, numbering them appropriately and thus allowing students to take intermittent short brain breaks.

Students translate numbered English words and enter into the grid. The letters in the shaded boxes, reading from top to bottom, form a French sentence. Students write this on the lines at the bottom, placing one letter on each dash (slashes separate the words), and translate it.
Choose which version you require for your students, depending on age, experience and ability: The 1-star versions have some of the letters added to the grid to support students, the 2-star versions just have the first letter of each word (or if the first letter is in a shaded box, the rest of the word has been supplied instead), while the 3-star versions (hardest) feature entirely blank grids. You can also differentiate by supplying the vocabulary support list to students who require it. This approach works especially well with the 2-star puzzles as students can use the first letter of any word they don’t know to find the French translation relatively quickly.
MORE TIPS: Students could work on these puzzles in groups or mixed ability pairs. To use again, laminate and use dry-wipe pens. Students could be encouraged to use French dictionaries or the Internet for words they do not know. They could also use them to check the meaning of the hidden sentence.
