12 fun festive puzzles worksheets for Key Stage 2 Mental Maths and Literacy / English (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar / SPaG) to use as warm ups, starters, revision, homework or early finisher activities in December. They could also be used as main lesson tasks. With 2 levels of challenge, this BUNDLE provides ideal differentiation in many classes, perfect for meaningful practice at this busy time of year, with no prep required. Some of the puzzles were designed for Year 3 and 4 but these are likely to suit some learners in Year 5 and 6 requiring a simpler level of challenge. Click on the links to see more detailed information and previews, or to purchase separately: Christmas Maths Puzzles Christmas Literacy (SPaG) Puzzles CHRISTMAS MATHS PUZZLES: There are 3 Set A Numeracy puzzles that best suit Year 6 and 5 (P7 and P6) and 3 Set B puzzles originally designed for Year 4 (P5) - and Year 3 (P4) if all concepts have been covered. Both sets could be used in the same class for differentiation if required. Set A might also suit some early KS3 classes. They work well at the busy end of term as little preparation is required and they are very flexible and can be left aside and picked up again as required. An engaging alternative to standard worksheets, these Hidden Word / Spot the Mistakes puzzles make ideal starter, early finisher or homework activities for this special time of year. Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a Christmas-related word is revealed after completing mental arithmetic calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Pupils circle any boxes containing mistakes. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the Christmas word. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Times Tables, Doubling and Halving, Multiplying and Dividing by 10 and 100, Place Value, Negative Numbers, Fractions, Percentages and Decimals (Not all concepts feature in Set B). LITERACY (EDITING / PROOFREADING PUZZLES: KS2 Christmas Editing / Proofreading puzzles. Minimal preparation required (ideal for busy end of term), these 6 fun Literacy / English puzzle worksheets provide practice of a range of Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) during late November and December. 3 puzzles were originally designed for Year 6 and 5 (P7 and P6) and 3 simpler ones for Year 3 and 4 (P4 and P5). Both sets could be used in the same class for differentiation if required. They could also be used for revision in early KS3. Versions are included with and without a festive background picture. All sentences are Christmas-themed. These puzzles work in a similar way to the maths ones above, a Christmas-related word being revealed after completing the editing work. Each puzzle contains 20 lines of text (or 15 in the simpler ones). Pupils circle any mistakes they spot. If there are 3 or more mistakes in a single line, they highlight the corresponding letter in the grid at the bottom of the page. At the end they rearrange the highlighted letters to reveal the Christmas word. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups, with pupils supporting each other and pooling their editing / proofreading skills. Pupils often forget or avoid re-reading their own work to check for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves. Some of the aspects of SPaG included: common spelling errors, full stops, capital letters, question marks, commas, colons, speech marks, proper nouns, missing words, repeated words, tenses, subordinate clauses and embedded clauses. These activities were made for revision and consolidation in Year 5 and 6 but might suit other years too. The boards were originally designed in A3 to work especially well with larger groups but you can scale it down to print in A4 if required or preferred. There are 6 game boards, two for each level of challenge, indicated with a star system, with one star being the least challenging. The one star version includes only unit fractions of small numbers. The two star version includes fractions of larger two-digit numbers, while the three star version progresses to fractions of three and four-digit numbers. Students work strategically as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They roll a dice each time to decide from which column to pick a calculation (the columns are numbered 1-6). Students write their answers on the board with a dry-wipe marker. MORE INFORMATION - TREASURE HUNT: This can be played multiple times in a lesson or across several lessons as groups can use different card sets each time. Teams complete a treasure hunt-type chain of fractions calculations, followed by a ‘Find the Target Number’ mental maths challenge, using a mixture of the four operations. There are 54 double-sided cards, forming sets of 6 cards for 9 teams. A key feature is the chance to involve lower ability students in a fun whole class activity to give them a boost of confidence without it being obvious their calculations are less challenging (3 of the sets are at an easier level). Full instructions included. Students collaborate on a treasure hunt type maths trail and when they’ve collected all 5 answers, they are given a target, which they must make using 3 given numbers. You can print and laminate the cards in batches of 3 sets, so if you don’t require them all, you needn’t print them. The cards should be printed double-sided (they’ve been laid out to facilitate this). I print by selecting the ‘2-Sided Short Edge (Top)’ option. However, if you can only print one-sided, print all the even-numbered pages, replace the paper, and print the odd-numbered pages on the back. Give each team their ‘Start’ card. Spread out all other cards, answer side up. You may wish to remove cards from any set not being used, although this is not necessary. On your signal, teams turn over their Start card and complete the calculation. Each team sends one person to collect the correct answer card, on the other side of which will be their next question and a letter to confirm which team it belongs to. Ensure teams immediately replace any cards not marked with their letter. The process continues until the team have answered all five calculations. On the other side of the final answer card will be a target number, which teams must make, using the numbers printed in boxes in the bottom right corner of 3 of their cards. Use all 3 numbers and only once each, using any of the 4 operations. The first to make their target number wins! This is a BUNDLE of popular hands-on sentence ordering Key Stage 1 Writing resources. It contains 3 different full class sets or reusable simple sentence construction activities and is great for differentiation. The jumbled sentences sets now also come with additional worksheet versions of all 90 boards. Originally designed for Year 1 (Primary 2 in Scotland) SPaG / Grammar lessons, these activities could be used elsewhere in EYFS / Reception (Primary 1) and Key Stage 1, depending on ability. Emergent writers love lifting the words off the boards to unscramble them to find the hidden simple sentence. INSTRUCTIONS: Print in colour on quality card to make it sturdy and laminate for repeated use. It’s ideal for using as a regular activity, with children working on a different one each session. Or choose the ones you make up if working with a smaller group. It could be used with SEN / ASN groups or others requiring support with writing. Words are printed in faint grey on each sheet in a random order. Once laminated, cut the word strips and stick each word on top of this faint type, using Blu Tack, Blu Tack ‘Glu Dots’ or equivalent. Each strip is in a different colour to help identify the board it is from. Train the children to replace the words to these starting positions and to wipe boards before putting them back.
