A Science teacher by trade, I've also been known to be found teaching Maths and PE! However, strange as it may seem, my real love is designing resources that can be used by other teachers to maximise the experience of the students. I am constantly thinking of new ways to engage a student with a topic and try to implement that in the design of the lessons.

Topic 7 REVISION (AQA A-level biology)

(0)
This revision lesson provides students with the opportunity to assess their understanding of topic 7 and identify those areas which need revisiting. Included in the lesson is a multiple-choice assessment consisting of 20 questions and a PowerPoint revealing the answers, along with explanations and workings for the more difficult questions, and key points which relate to the AQA A-level biology specification. The title of topic 7 is genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems and content from all four of the sub-topics in this topic is challenged within this assessment. The PowerPoint also contains further questions on topic 7 to challenge knowledge not directly covered in the 20 questions and prior knowledge checks when the content links to work covered in one of the previous 6 topics. This lesson has been designed to be used at the end of the topic and/or in the build up to the final A-level assessments.

Solutions (and dissolving)

(0)
A fast-paced, quick lesson which focuses on the key terminology that is involved in the separation topic so that students are confident with the definitions and to use them in context. A lot of the key terms begin with the prefix SOL and the opening task challenges students to use their Chemistry knowledge to convert numbers to letters to come up with these three letters. Having completed the crossword with the 5 key terms, solute, solution, solubility, solvent and soluble, students have to match the crossword clues with each term. Moving forwards, students are introduced to the term, saturated, and briefly shown the meaning of this word. The final task of the lesson challenges the students to use each of the 6 terms beginning with S to complete a passage about salt dissolving in a water.

States of matter and changing state

(0)
This is an informative and engaging lesson, which has been designed for GCSE but is perfectly suitable for younger students who are studying the states of matter. Students will have encountered this topic at KS3 and potentially before, and therefore the aim of this lesson is to consolidate that knowledge and to deepen in critical areas. A number of quick competitions have been written into the lesson to maintain engagement and to test prior knowledge in a different way. In addition, progress checks are found at regular intervals so that students can constantly assess their understanding. The start of the lesson looks at the different properties of the three states and ensures that particle diagrams are not only recognised but can be explained. A lot of students consider elements to be in one state only at all times and therefore time is taken to show them how the specific temperature is the determining factor on the state. Students are guided through using the melting and boiling points to determine which state a substance is in at a given temperature. The rest of the lesson focuses on changing state and the change in the particles at each of these stages.

Properties of waves

(0)
This is a concise, fast-paced lesson designed to cover the key terminology associated with the waves topic at GCSE and ensure that students are able to recognise and use these terms in context. A number of terms, such a transverse, are known by students but rarely correctly used in written descriptions. Therefore, through a range of tasks and quick competitions, students will meet these terms, learn how to define them and then be asked to apply their knowledge to understanding check questions. This lesson has been written in conjuction with the lesson titled “Wave velocity” and students are challenged to keep an A - Z of key terms during both lessons so they can challenge themselves during revision points.
