A full half term scheme of work aimed at year 9 students, covering analysis, discussion, and writing of Gothic literature. Independent activities are differentiated by target levels, and there is stretch and challenge throughout for most able/gifted and talented students. There are points of self and peer assessment within the SOW. Teaching points of the sublime and uncanny literary concepts support most able to consider Gothic elements in 19th century texts at GCSE. SOW ends with an extended writing task, to be marked in detail by teacher, and includes potential targets to be given to students to develop writing skill and support progression.

Group/class reading opportunities throughout. Reading skills covered are analytical paragraphs of short extracts, and comparative writing. Some descriptive writing opportunities, and a range of transactional writing skills covered. End of unit assessment could be either analytical, comparative, or transactional writing. Final few lessons cover some speech writing.

This unit would work well for the final weeks before the GCSE exam, but easily adaptable to first time teaching. Included in the unit of work are mini quizzes, example questions, extracts, and example answers based on the AQA specification, however easily adaptable to Edexcel or OCR.
