Designs With A Message
Adinkra cloths are craft with a message. Children explore the traditional symbols printed on the cloths and create their own symbols to tell a story of their own lives.
Ethiopian Icon Painting
Take a trip back in time to introduce art of icon painting from ancient kingdom of Ethiopia.
Children explore features of this art form and consider how they were painted and their purpose. They copy small areas of icons to capture style elements.
Get Beading!
Time to have a go at beading! The traditional Ndebele methods of beading are demonstrated and children have a chance to experiment with this new technique.
Beadwork Fashion
Ndebele beadwork is a thriving tradition and can be found on all sorts of modern items. Children explore how it has been used in fashion and design simple belts based on the geometric designs of the Ndebele people
Mask Detective
Time to be a mask detective and ask, ‘what is a mask?’ Children explore the rich masking tradition in Africa and consider their design and purposes, looking at lots of examples from across Africa.
Wall hangings
Using the techniques of flour resist batik, children create wall hangings in the style of the Mozambique batik they have studied.
Children are encouraged to carefully select techniques and tools to create a quality product.
Icon Creation
Create an Ethiopian pocket icon. Children explore techniques of painting on wood and create their own icon images based on their studies.
Aeroplanes
Children look at different aeroplanes, make paper aeroplanes and then see which flies the furthest.
Biographies
Discuss biographies and autobiographies and list the features of each showing diffs. Chn write a fact file or biography of one of well-known immigrants or descendants of immigrants identified in S10. Make class books for other children to read in school library.
Asylum Seekers
Explain that some people come to Britain as asylum seekers or refugees to escape from problems in their home country. Use The Arrival by Shaun Tan to empathise with people coming to Britain. Children draw part of one of short stories from Give me Shelter.
Ndebele Beadwork
Zooming in on South Africa, children are introduced to the incredible beadwork of the Ndebele people of KwaNdebele.
Through web images children explore the history of this craft and investigate its key visual elements.
Energy
This session we consider how we are using up fossil fuels. How did we heat our homes and cook in the past? Discuss renewable energy and any local schemes to try and use more renewable energy. Challenge children to make a solar oven and cook something with it!
Free To Roam
In the past landowner’s have not wanted people to have access to their land. Children look at how the introduction of National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 has changed this. Children annotate a map showing ‘right to roam’ areas, trails, etc.
Shopping Bags
Food was bought locally and regularly in small shops after WW2. Assistants picked and weighed food for you, there was very little packaging as paper bags or your shopping basket were used. Children write a letter to persuade shops not to use plastic bags.
Shopping Basket
Look at products that would be on weekly shopping list, consider the different ways in which these were sold – less packaging. Discuss equivalents between imperial and metric measurements and money. Children convert prices or sort foods into then and now.
Telegrams
Children look at old telegrams and then write their own about an important event to the British Prime Minister of the day.
Telephones
Children order pictures of old telephones. They decode, then write mobile ‘phone text messages.
The Italian Job
Children watch a car chase scene from the original Italian Job and try and guess its date. They create their own car chase using toy cars and film to show the rest of the class.
Think Global, Grow Local
Discuss Farmers Markets and Pick Your Own food taking into consideration food miles, energy use, carbon footprint and produce. Calculate food miles involved in weekly shop (using labels and packaging from supermarkets). Children write an acrostic.
Trains
Children look at trains from different ages, then try to make a moving vehicle using magnets, then have a competition involving choosing magnetic metal objects.
