Example newspaper report based on the children’s novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. This exemplar newspaper article is perfect to use as a WAGOLL when studying The Iron Man. The example text reports on the events in Chapter 2 of the book when Hogarth first sees the Iron Man. The model newspaper report comes with a feature identification worksheet for children to fill in, plus an answer sheet that can be uploaded for remote learning or shared in class. After identifying the features, pupils complete the quotation punctuation activities. Then pupils use the templates provided to plan and write their own newspaper report based on the example text. Pupils’ reports can be about the events in Chapter 2 or a different event from later on in the novel. The following resources are included: Humpback Whales Vocabulary Vocabulary about humpback whales. This resource can be used in two ways to familiarise pupils with the subject specific vocabulary: 1) cut out and match the words, definitions and images; 2) use as a word mat during the planning and writing process. Humpback Whales Vocabulary Wall Display Display the key words and matching images around the classroom with this resource. Identify Features: Tense and Sentence Types Pupils identify different sentence types and tenses from an example introduction and Did you know? section from a non-chronological report about giant pandas. With answers. Humpback Whales Matching Sentences Match the beginning and ends of sentences about whales. This activity makes pupils familiar with the sentence structure of a non-chronological report and facts associated with whales. They then order the sentences, identify the relative clauses and finally write about humpback whales. With answers. Re-Order Sentences Elephants Organise the sentences about elephants into the appropriate section. Then order the sentences to make a paragraph. With answers. An example Conquering the Monster Tale with feature identification worksheet (plus answers) and planning worksheet for pupils to create their own story. The story is based on the structure of the second half of The Iron Man novel by Ted Hughes when a monster (Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon) appears and causes problems, the monster is difficult to defeat, is defeated by the Iron Man, and all is well again. Pupils read the exemplar story as a WAGOLL. Pupils identify the features from the text. Pupils identify the structure of the story. Pupils compare the structure of the example story with the Iron Man (or any other conquering the monster tale) Pupils plan their own story based on the structure of the example text. Pupils write their own story including features previously identified.
