Four worksheets aimed at learning how to accurately punctuate direct speech.
The worksheets are differentiated to cover a range of difficulty levels.
The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks).
Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including:
• The reporting clause before the direct speech
• The reporting clause after the direct speech
• Two or more sentences of direct speech together
• The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech
• The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech
A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’.
The worksheets can be completed independently or in pairs.
The worksheets are themed around a variety of traditional tales, but knowledge of the stories is not necessary to complete the activities.
Answers to all tasks are included.

• 5 separate glossaries for each chapter
The glossaries are organised into alphabetical order, encourging the use of dictionary skills which is a key component of the Key Stage Two curriculum for Years 3 and 4 (using dictionaries to check the meaning of words that they have read) and Years 5 and 6 (use dictionaries to check the spelling and meaning of words).
The dictionary of key vocabulary helps pupils of all abilities, including SEN and EAL pupils, with their comprehension of the story.

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat vocabulary cards and two presentations to support the teaching of all three verses of the poem The Owl and the Pussy-Cat by Edward Lear to EYFS or Key Stage 1 pupils. All selected 29 words/phrases from the poem contain matching images.
Vocabulary cards
The vocabulary cards can be used as a glossary, or cut out and used as a matching activity or as flashcards. These are particularly useful for pupils with English as an additional language (EAL) and pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to pre-teach the vocabulary before reading the poem, and again mid-unit.
The cards can also be used as a glossary for all pupils to refer to while studying the poem to aid understanding.
The cards can be printed onto A3 and displayed in the classroom as a visual reminder.
Vocabulary Presentation
The 59 slide presentation can be used to pre-teach the vocabulary, to test pupils or to prompt the class as they recite the lines to help pupils to memorize the poem.
Poem Presentation

Example persuasive text - a letter to an ogre - plus writing feature identification worksheet with answers.
The persuasive letter contains the following features: language features such as the rule of three, repetition for effect, alliteration, metaphor, hyperbole, emotional language, flattery and rhetorical questions; grammar features such as exclamatory sentences, subordinate clauses, fronted adverbials followed by commas and expanded noun phrases; and punctuation such as exclamation marks, question marks, apostrophes for contraction, apostrophes for singular possession, apostrophes for plural possession, brackets, colons and dashes.
This example persuasive letter WAGOLL can be used to examine the features of persuasive writing and letter writing before pupils embark on writing their own persuasive letter.
All documents are included as PDFs and easily editable Word documents.
Answers for the feature identification worksheet are included.

An example diary text based on Chapter 1 of A Dangerous Game by Malorie Blackman with differentiated Feature Find sheet and answers.
The diary entry is written from Sam’s point of view on the day he does press-ups.
The exemplar text can be used as a WAGOLL before pupils write their own diary entry based on Chapter 1 or based on events that occur later on in the novel, such as in Chapter 2.

Two activities involving identifying correct and incorrect use of colons. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the colons have been put in the correct place for a variety of sentences.
There are two activities provided:
✽ Colon Cards/Quiz: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz.
✽ Colon Worksheet: pupils identify whether the colons are correctly punctuating the sentences, and then make any necessary corrections; identify different types of colon usage; add missing colons to sentences and write sentences using colons. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz.
Different ways of using colons are demonstrated, including:
• Using a colon to introduce a list
• Using a colon to separate related main clauses where the second clause explains the first clause
• Using a colon to emphasise a word or phrase
Answers to all tasks are included.

These activities are particularly suitable for years 5 or 6.

Two example letters from the point of view of Sam from the children’s novel A Dangerous Game by Malorie Blackman.
These exemplar informal letters are perfect to use as WAGOLLs after reading Chapter 4 of the text. The letters are written from Sam to two different recipients, Sam’s parents and Sam’s friend, about his trip to Scotland.
The contrasting model letters provide the opportunity for discussion about writing for a particular audience. Pupils can discuss the similarities and differences between the two.
Pupils can identify the features of the model texts, and then plan and write their own informal letter based on the examples.
