News Values
Three lessons and an accompanying workbook covering the production of News. The unit covers Galtung and Ruge’s News Values and explores whether they are still relevant to contemporary news production.
News Values Lesson 3
Students end this unit of work by exploring what factors besides ‘News Values’ influence the production of news. They explore concepts such as Citizen Journalism and relate this to contemporary examples.
News Values Lesson 2
Following the introductory lesson, learners begin to apply their knowledge of New Values to contemporary examples from newspapers and online. Learners discuss what is meant by a ‘news agenda’ and try to determine the agendas of major newspapers.
News Values Lesson 1
A powerpoint that asks learners to define ‘News’ and compare their thoughts with established knowledge on the subject. Learners are then intriduced to Galtung and Ruge’s 12 news values and asked to discuss any recent examples they can think of. Comes with accompanying workbook that includes several tasks to consolidate learning.

Three short lessons to introduce learners to the idea of analysing advertisements. The first and third lesson concentrate on analysis and the second lesson focusses on the representation of women in advertisements since the 1950s and encourages discussion around the topic.
Persuasive techniques in advertising
Learners begin by defining pathos, logos and ethos before applying the knowledge to some television advertisements.
History of Women in Advertising
After watching an online documentary learners discuss the representation of women in advertising since the 1950s, comparing it with contemporary representations.
Deconstructing Advertisements
A 60 minute lesson which provides learners with a framework to deconstruct advertisements. They apply a series of questions to a set of 5-6 adverts and discuss concepts such as audience and purpose in relation to these ads.

Social Media
A full series of resources for the teaching of Social Media as part of a Media course. The bundle contains 6 powerpoint presentations with 69 slides in total, several workbooks, worksheets and a social media glossary. The unit is aimed at level 3 adult learners but can easily be used with younger students. It is not designed with any specific exam board in mind but the topics and activities should be applicable to all media courses.
Social Media, Privacy and Permanence + Social Change
Two lessons related to social media. In the first students discuss the sharing of information online and the issues of privacy and permanence. In the second learners research a news story about social change that has been fuelled by social media and present their findings.

A 14 slide Powerpoint presentation and accompanying workbook designed to cover the topics of social media, fake news and opinion forming. Learners discuss some well-known stories in politics, define some key terms and research the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Social Media and Language
A ready-to-go 90 minute lesson focussing on the topic of social media and its impact on language. Learners discuss some key debates associated with the topic, read an article about endangered languages and discuss prescriptivist and descriptivist approaches. Contains a 13 slide PowerPoint presentation and an accompanying workbook.
Social Media and Education
A two hour lesson that covers the topic of social media and education. Learners discuss advantages and disadvantages whilst making notes in a shared online document. They then evaluate the activity and the discussion before attempting a written response to an exam style question.
