Perfect for developing Spanish language skills in general, as well as for practising and revising Spanish numbers There are 48 differentiated questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. There’s also a question card template for students to apply language skills creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. My students also genuinely enjoy putting new questions together for each other. Challenge cards are really versatile too - we use them not only when we’re focusing on the target vocab, but throughout the year as starters and refreshers. The goal is not simply to learn and practice how to count in Spanish, but also to enjoy working with language, and to feel confident about doing so. Dominoes games are an ideal language learning activity, and a lively alternative to more traditional practice and consolidation activities. These games will help students build up and embed their knowledge of how to tell the time in Spanish in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino time sequence line. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading. There are three games, each with a slightly different level of challenge: Challenge One features a range of clock times,o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past the hour - students tend to learn those clock times first, so it’s good to have a real focus on them to ensure students are confident with the general concept of telling the time in Spanish. I’ve used en punto to express o’clock, but I point out to students that it’s not absolutely necessary, and they’ll see Es la una for example, perhaps even more frequently than Es la una en punto, which tends to convey a certain emphasis. The time phrase appears first, followed by the clock face. Challenge Two features a range of all analogue clock times, and is a slightly longer game than Challenge One. Again, the time phrase appears first, followed by the clock face. Challenge Three also features a range of analogue clock times, and is the same size as Challenge Two. In this challenge, the clock face appears first, followed by the time phrase, which works slightly differently on recall, and really does help to consolidate knowledge. There’s definitely prep involved - download, print out, and laminate. Laminating is definitely worth the extra time and expense, because the dominoes are far more learner-friendly, and will last in excellent condition for years. The background design on each challenge is different, allowing students to identify which challenge the individual dominoes belong to. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. 500 high-frequency French verbs, listed alphabetically both French-English and English-French - a great learning support resource for KS4 French moving into advanced French learners, and can also be given to advanced KS3 French students, providing a language road map with learning goals, outlining the verbs they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. There are 42 pages in the book, and all 500 verbs are listed alphabetically French-English and English-French. Verbs that are conjugated with the auxiliary être verb are indicated by (être) following the particular verb. The books are ideal for***KS4 French*** students, and as a refresher and verb audit for those moving into advanced level A Level French. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA). We use the Notes and Next Steps template to think about progress and vocabulary knowledge. Students find this really useful, and do like to map and track their own progress. It can be helpful in guiding and informing whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really useful learning activity too - students also note down any new French verbs they learn, enabling them to build a really comprehensive verb vocabulary reference resource. My students have always found these a really useful learning activity. With the structured speaking prompts, they are able to develop confidence in their speaking, working independently in pairs or small groups. At the same time, they are building their vocabulary and enhancing their understanding and knowledge of English grammar too. There are 15 questions with 15 suggested responses. As students become more confident and competent, they begin to rely less on the prompt cards, and answer questions in their own way - and even ask them differently too, if their talk partner is using the answer card as the main prompt. The questions in this freebie are aimed at advanced beginner to intermediate English students, though my more advanced students enjoy ‘going back to the start’ too, particularly near exam time. There’s a reference sheet, with all the questions and answers written out in full for additional learning support. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional ‘vocabulary drilling’ exercises. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their core Spanish verbs vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write activities have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the verbs don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this is a great way of encouraging your students to engage with new language, and to build their vocabulary at the same time. This prepares them really well for creative activities in Spanish - they will have a rich vocabulary to choose from. The Reference, Recall & Write workbook has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Spanish-English reference list of all 99 verbs. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarize themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in Spanish. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in***Spanish***. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook. There are three differentiated recall challenges: Written Recall Challenge One students write the English verbs from a Spanish prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, Spanish-English. Written Recall Challenge Two again, students write the verbs in English from a Spanish prompt, but the Spanish verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding Spanish verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. The aim of the game is to create an English number chain as quickly as possible, starting with the first card zero, and ending with the final card, thirty-one. Laminate the cards if you can - they’re more learner-friendly, and they remain in excellent condition for years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. I often play too - students really do enjoy it when I join in, and they seem to work that little bit harder on their concentration and pronunciation. Students walk around the room, talking to each other in their best English accent, sharing the information on their cards, until they have arranged the numbers in the correct order. The game is ideal for language learning, with a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. The images are essentially visual prompts and clues, helping students infer meaning from context. The longer and more complex sentences really help students focus on reading out loud accurately, and think more carefully about language, and how to pronounce it correctly. There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as singular and plural, adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun, which can differ from language to language: I’ve found this is really useful for students who may be learning more than one language at a particular time. This is a very successful way of really getting the most of what looks like a straightforward game for consolidating the target vocabulary - it is actually so much more. Die Farben auf deutsch 12 posters / flashcards These four adjectival agreement posters, with a focus on the colour grün, make an ideal grammar and speaking prompt in***German class*** - for example, I encourage students to look carefully at the similarities and differences between der grüne Regenschirm and die grüne Flasche in the singular, and die grünen Regenschirme and die grünen Flaschen in the plural. I use questions such as Richtig der falsch? die grüne Regenschirme? , really emphasising, even exaggerating pronunciation, so that they can hear the difference in agreement. I often write the questions on the whiteboard too, as it’s equally important that they are able to recognize the differences in the written words too, and to link sound with spelling - all of this means I really make the most from my classroom learning display. They like to work independently, either alone, in pairs or in small groups, challenging themselves and each other to progress through the challenges. In general, sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. Word searches are easily differentiated too. In this set, there are five Spanish to Spanish grids, with the Spanish words as prompts. Students then find them in Spanish in the grid. A great way of really consolidating vocabulary is to get students to complete the word list on the grid sheet too. There are also five English to Spanish grids. With these, the prompt words are in English, so students have to know the correct Spanish word in order to find it in the grid. There's a word list to complete on these too. As the challenge increases, the words appear in an increasing number of different directions, and students can identify which directions they're looking for by referring to the arrow key on each grid. The word searches are in landscape format, and each grid has a corresponding answer key, which provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, helping them develop more independence in their learning. This kind of activity is useful in a variety of learning contexts: for cover lessons, as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the school year. Die Farben auf Deutsch - 8 posters / flashcards These four my favourite colour posters make an ideal speaking prompt in the Primary German classroom - I encourage children to ask each other Was ist deine Lieblingsfarbe? as a lesson starter / warm-up, and to select a different colour every time they answer. As they learn more colours, their answers become more varied. I tend to introduce the plural form with the connective und (and) quite quickly, so that children can extend their answers as much as they possibly can - they have great fun seeing who knows the most colours, and can create the longest answers. The key colours are: blue, green, pink and yellow. There are two backgrounds to choose from - either the German flag, or plain without frame, to keep prep costs to a minimum. Laminate the posters if possible, or print on card stock, particularly if you’re going to use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too: they’ll display really nicely, and remain in excellent condition for years. These French animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous French look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of French. They introduce learners to a range of animals in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. Students definitely notice the different words for a/an, and ask why some animals are un, and others are une. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as ours and loup. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning. The animals are: a bear : a bee : a bird : a butterfly : a cat : a dog : a fish : a fox : a frog : a horse : a kangaroo : a monkey : a mouse : an owl : a parrot : a rabbit : a spider : a squirrel : a turtle / a tortoise : a wolf It doesn’t matter if some of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters / flashcards provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in French, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in French. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts. They find that this way of working really does help them to develop their confidence and embed the vocabulary into their longer-term memory. There are lots of games and activities to play, and I’ve described several that are successful with my groups. They love to quiz and test themselves and each other on a regular basis - it’s a very popular alternative to more traditional vocabulary drilling tasks and tests. The vocabulary groups are as follows: saludos : días de la semana : meses y las estaciones del año : números 0-20 : mi familia : palabras frecuentes : frases útiles para la clase : preguntas y respuestas The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Spanish-English reference list of all 99 words & phrases. My students use their recall workbooks quite a few times, simply covering previous answers. This means that prep and paper are kept to a minimum. There are three written recall challenges: = Written Recall Challenge One students write the English word or phrase from a Spanish prompt, with all the words and phrases grouped together in the same category = Written Recall Challenge Two with this challenge, students write the words or phrases in Spanish from an English prompt, and again, they’re all group together in the same category = Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge ‘switches’ at each question from Spanish to English, and lists words and phrases randomly from each category. This challenges the memory more than when the vocabulary is in the order learners first learn it in, with the additional challenge of moving between the two languages = Ideas, Notes and Next Steps encourages students to reflect on their progress = Card template for creative and practical application of language Laminate the game cards if you can - they are far more learner-friendly, and the additional prep and expense is definitely worth it, as the cards will last in excellent conditional for years.
