PRIMARY ITALIAN KS3 ITALIAN DAYS OF THE WEEK WORD SEARCH Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Italian, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie features a word search focusing on the days of the week in Italian, key beginner vocabulary for Italian learners. This search grid is***Italian to English***, where learners are prompted with the Italian words, and look for them in Italian in the grid. For additional consolidation, the grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting students’ knowledge to the test! Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Italian and English, and facilitates learner independence. They’re great for independent learning - I just give my students free choice to choose the level of challenge, making sure that over time, everyone really does challenge themselves! Students at this age are developing learning skills in general, as well as learning Latin, and I’ve found that this particular design of grid and challenge level, works really well as an all-round learning resource. PRIMARY SPANISH NUMBERS Los números cero - diez: diez sopas de letras! My Primary Spanish learners really enjoy learning their vocab with word searches. In terms of pedagogy, they really are a great way of providing students with opportunities not only to embed their vocab, but also to engage with the written word and spelling in Spanish. They are really easy to differentiate, ensuring that students have a series of progressive challenges. I use word searches regularly, and have a stock of them ready in folders - they’re ready to go for starters, refreshers, plenaries, fun-time fillers or activities for cover lessons, at any time during the school year, as well as when I’m introducing numbers in Spanish - ideal for high school beginner Spanish too. In this set, there are five Spanish to Spanish grids, with the Spanish words as prompts. Students then find them in Spanish in the grid. PRIMARY GERMAN WORD WALL VOCABULARY DISPLAY GERMAN DAYS MONTHS SEASONS WORD WALL This German word wall display creates an instant introduction to the days of the week and the months and seasons of the year in German, and really brightens up the learning environment too. I like to share essential vocab that we can use in everyday language with my young learners from the beginning of their learning. We use them not only when we’re introducing and practising days, months and seasons, but also for developing German language skills and awareness in general. We talk a lot about the similarities and differences in the different languages, such as the use of capital letters, and we look very closely for cognates too. GCSE ITALIAN KS4 ITALIAN A LEVEL ITALIAN CONDITIONAL TENSE 25 ITALIAN -ARE VERBS My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS4 Italian students who are moving on to more complex texts tenses in Italian, and for KS5 Italian A Level Italian students as revision. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. I see this a lot with the future tense too, and tend to introduce both tenses quite closely together. It’s also easy to confuse the future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well.
