ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS FREEBIE

ADVANCED BEGINNER ENGLISH INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS FREEBIE 10 cards in question format Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning. The questions feature a range of tenses and moods, such as the present tense, present subjunctive, perfect, imperfect, and conditional, with a couple of questions focusing on if + subjunctive + conditional clauses. There is a significant amount of implicit input on a range of grammatical concepts, particularly the use of tenses. I try to include as broad a range of language as I can in the questions, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also about actively learning it. Questions formats are varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in English. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts. I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going. Frequent and regular engagement with the activity brings the best results: with the planning sheet, students can create and prepare increasingly detailed and more complex responses, reflecting their learning progress. I definitely find it useful to read through the questions together as a whole-group, with students offering initial suggested responses. This ensures everyone can actually access the language, and they also benefit a lot from each others’ ideas. ESL EFL ENGLISH FOR CHILDREN BEGINNER ENGLISH HOW TO TELL TIME IN ENGLISH O’CLOCK ANALOG WORKSHEETS FREEBIE I like to have sets of super simple worksheets that I can give to my young beginner learners of English, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. I give my students these worksheets at the same time as introducing the time set, so that they can practise and embed both recognising the time, and writing the time phrase itself. Students really enjoy the opportunity to test their recall too. The worksheets are useful in a number of contexts: I use them for sub lessons, as starters, plenaries, five-minute refreshers and home learning activities. Twenty fruits in Italian, with both words and pictures - I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my young beginner learners of Italian, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their Italian vocabulary books, or file them in their Italian vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful Italian vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning. We also discuss which fruits we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own word and picture dictionary lists, adding to it as they learn more. I don’t necessarily have all the fruits in my teaching and learning plan, but it’s always a good idea to give children opportunity to engage with a broader range of words and sounds, which they begin to absorb quite naturally. The fruits focus on the definite article, either singular or plural, which is a great for promoting discussion about grammatical concepts in Italian, specifically gender of Italian nouns. The fruits are: the red apple the bananas the cherries the fig the green grapes the lemon the mangos the nectarine the olives the oranges the papaya the peach the pears the pineapple the pumpkin the raspberry the rhubarb the starfruit the strawberries the watermelon There are two backgrounds to choose from - Italian flag, which I use for Italian vocabulary display, or plain. Have a browse in my store for more Italian visual vocabulary lists, and a wide range of other Italian teaching and learning materials, with Italian dollar deals, special offer bundles, and lots of freebies. I’ve found that the lists are a great learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. This list is a collection of 35 high-frequency French conjunctions and connectives that students will meet in the advanced beginner French to intermediate French stages of French learning programs, and useful for students beginning advanced French as a vocabulary audit. It’s an important step in language learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize French conjunctions and connectives, and are confident with the meaning of those words in their first / home language, so that they can produce more detailed and descriptive language and more complex sentences and texts as soon as possible. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning 35 conjunctions and connectives all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing French vocabulary, and it is definitely the case that frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory. There are two alphabetical lists - one French-English, and one English-French, as I’ve found that most language students prefer to have both as a reference resource. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag (which is good as part of a French vocabulary display), and plain white. I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my young beginner learners of French, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell time. Children glue the lists into their French vocabulary books, or file them in their French vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful French vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning. For young and / or beginner French learners, I focus initially on a single time set, and this list shows half past the hour on a single page. This is because in my experience students benefit from a very clear outline of new language and vocabulary, avoiding lots of text on a single page - even my older students who are completely new to French prefer this. When I’m sure that students are confident with o’clock, I then move on to additional time sets. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag, which I use for French vocabulary display, or plain. I encourage my beginner French students of all ages and stages to build up comprehensive vocabulary banks that they can reference easily whenever they need it, and they’re also really useful for regular vocabulary audits, which really helps students map their progress and keep track of their learning. Students take responsibility for organising their own learning materials from the very beginning of their learning, keeping them carefully in vocabulary learning files or folders. My students all have reference resource folders or files - these can have a range of formats - for instance, sticking into a large exercise book, or punching holes down the left-hand side, and adding to files (we also use twine or thick string). I also use this kind of vocabulary list for quick vocabulary quizzes, spelling competitions and so on, and it also works well laminated for small-group work in class time. The font size is fairly large, as ensuring that language is clear and accessible is essential for beginner language learners, as they begin to familiarize themselves with words and spelling systems in a new language. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag, which I generally use for French vocabulary display, and plain. I’ve created a lot of quick conjugation workbooks for my students and they’re really popular and effective. They’re a great way of practicing, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate all the various verb groups and tenses in French. I use them in a range of learning contexts such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for sub lessons. Students really benefit from several opportunities to work through the workbook, once or twice a term across a whole school year is a great way of both mapping progress and developing overall understanding and competence. The workbooks focus on specific sets of 25 high-frequency verbs in a range of tenses. They include modals, regular, irregular & mixed and reflexive verbs. Each workbook is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French : English and English : French Three conjugation challenges each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding French verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps sheet which encourages students to think about how their understanding of French conjugation works, what progress they have made, what their targets for improvement might realistically be, and what they might reasonably do in order to meet those targets. 6-page answer key booklet In this sampler: high-frequency verbs list: French-English -IR & -OIR verbs list: English-French regular -ER verbs present tense conjugation: Challenge 1 with answer key regular & irregular -RE verbs perfect tense conjugation: Challenge 2 with answer key regular & irregular -IR & -OIR verbs: imperfect tense conjugation: Challenge 3 with answer key regular & irregular high-frequency verbs simple future tense conjugation: Challenge 1 with answer key regular -ER verbs conditional tense conjugation: Challenge 2 with answer key regular & irregular -RE verbs future perfect tense conjugation: Challenge 3 with answer key MERCI BEAUCOUP ET BONNE CONJUGAISON !

Mots Cachés are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie word search features fourteen French Christmas words, which helps to develop students’ awareness of some Francohphone Christmas traditions and figures, such as Saint Nicholas and Père Fouettard. I use this as a prompt to stimulate discussion about French Christmas practices and customs, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too. I always give answer keys to my word searches - that works really well in terms of helping students work and learn independently together without me, and gives them even more opportunity to engage with French. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a bonus! I use word searches as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the Christmas season, not only if I’m introducing French Christmas vocabulary.
