A quick number assessment to test retention of written and mental calculation methods, including short and long methods, decimals and BODMAS.
2014 Curriculum.
No fractions related questions - purely number and place value based calculation.
A fully resourced lesson on finding the missing digit within addition and subtraction questions. This allows children to practise inverse operations and apply written methods in a fun and interactive way.
The lesson is designed as a code breaking lesson, where children must solve the missing digit problems in order to save a class prized possession. A lesson plan, 8 differentiated worksheets, a letter from the villains for the starter and an answer sheet is included.
The questions are differentiated and cover:
- 2 digit by 2 digit addition
- 2 digit by 2 digit subtraction
- 3 digit by 3 digit addition
- 3 digit by 3 digit subtraction
- 4 digit by 4 digit addition
- 4 digit by 4 digit subtraction
- Decimal addition
- Decimal subtraction
This gives you the flexibility to choose the appropriate level for your class, or differentiate for different groups within your class by assigning each group a different villain's lock to break.
A twist on the classic family game of 'Guess Who' based on the new 2014 curriculum.
My Year 3 class really enjoyed this game as a method to revise maths vocabulary and my Year 6 class loved it last year too.

This is a carefully thought-out game to be played in pairs to practise maths vocabulary such as greater than, less than, multiple, odd, even, factor, square, cube, etc (age-appropriate guidelines included within pack). Instructions and a list of the covered objectives for the 2014 curriculum are included.

For children to use at home, to learn their multiplication tables from 2 to 12. Homework Grids: The first sheet can be used as either an initial assessment sheet or a timed game for those who are more able. The final sheet is for children to choose their own tables to practise on a smaller scale. Challenge Grids: An extension, to practise times tables out of order, once children are confident with them in order.
I created this as a four week homework programme for my Year 6s to practise their calculation methods whilst encouraging parental involvement.
After a parent workshop to introduce the methods my school uses to teach the main calculation methods (not included), each child took home a game board (included) and one set of calculation cards each week (included) as their maths homework for 4 weeks:
Week 1: Addition
Week 2: Subtraction
Week 3: Multiplication
Week 4: Division
I asked the children to record who they had played the game against at home and encouraged them to play for 10 minutes a day to practise their written methods. I have seen huge improvements in my Year 6 class's written calculation skills as a consequence and many parents have commented how it has helped them to understand the calculation methods too.
I designed this as a fun game to practise the written methods of calculation. Although I chose the option of encouraging the link between home and school and asking the parents to join in too, alternatively you might decide that the game is best in your school to be played in the classroom as a morning starter or within intervention sessions.
A set of instructions is included.
Please note, fraction questions are not included in this game, as I wanted it to focus purely on numerical written methods.
I am currently working on differentiated packs of cards so that this game can also be given to younger year groups.
A lot of time and love has gone into this project, and I hope you and your class enjoy it. I'd appreciate any feedback.
Vocabulary cards for the key KS2 2D shapes required for the Year 6 SATs under the 2014 curriculum.
I used these Geometry cards for the children to sort into 'families' of shapes to see the connections between various 2D shapes.
The children then categorised various 2D shapes using Venn and Carol Diagrams.
A set of 6 cards, each with a car's price (working in ten thousands and hundred thousands) and some other information (based in decimals and hundreds) which can be used to create questions that require children to add, subtract and round numbers.
I have attached an editable example of questions.

The lessons currently centre around King Henry VIII's gardens to link to a Tudor topic, but they could easily be adapted to fit in with your topic by simply changing the main character from Henry VIII to another individual who might own a large amount of land.
The three lessons focus on different parts of King Henry VIII’s gardens:
• Lesson 1: The Knot Gardens (a perimeter investigation)
• Lesson 2: The Rose Gardens (finding the area of rectangles and rectilinear shapes)
• Lesson 3: The Stables (an investigation into the relationship between area and perimeter)
