KS2 Seaside Comprehension SUMMER Scavenger Hunt

Make reading fun by using this easy-prep summer Scavenger Hunt comprehension activity with a seaside theme. Your Key Stage 2 students will work individually, in pairs or small groups and use their reading skills to answer questions, unscramble the mystery words and crack the code. This engaging activity is perfect for using comprehension skills to find the answers and be the first to unlock the secret 4-digit code. Players use the cards to read short passages and find out about things that they might find on the beach - starfish, sand, hermit crabs etc. There are questions to be answered but they are on different cards therefore it is important to understand and remember what they have read. The answers are code words which will lead to letters to be unscrambled to lead to a mystery location. Who will be the first to find this? This activity makes reading and understanding fun and the competitive element will engage students. You will get: • 10 cards with a short passage to read and a question that relates to another card so students must understand and remember what they have read • Answer record sheet for each player or team - use the answers to find letters to unscramble and find the mystery location and crack the 4-digit code As well as: • a short introduction to set the scene • answers for you to assess instantly if they are correct or not • seaside themed winners’ certificates • directions • The themes of the readings are all related to the seaside so ideal for summer • Prep is easy and quick – print & cut the cards into 2 and distribute these around the classroom or table and you are ready for a fun and engaging lesson. Great for you: • Low-prep • Ideal for your literacy and summer centres • Great as independent activities in a literacy lesson • Ideal if you need a quick resource These activities are suggested for Key Stage 2 – in particular Years 4 & 5 but may also be suitable for other years Great for your students: • Gives students opportunities to read carefully and remember what they have read • The challenge to find the mystery location and crack the 4-digit code will engage them • Great for working together Make it more interesting by using a 4-digit lock and pre-setting the numbers to this code. Make reading and science fun by using this easy-prep Vocabulary Trail and Memory game cards with a sea life & ocean theme. Your Key Stage 2 students will work individually, in small groups and use their comprehension skills to match meanings and words, unscramble the mystery words and crack the code. There are 2 different resources - 10 words & meanings for a whole class vocabulary trail and 20 words & meanings as small cards to play popular games in small groups such as Memory, Pairs or Snap. These engaging activities are perfect for using comprehension skills to match the words and definitions and be the first to unlock the secret 4-digit code or be the one with the most cards at the end of a memory game. Players use the cards to read short science passages and find out about scientific vocabulary related to oceans. For the whole class activity, the answers will reveal letters which will give a ‘mystery code’ when these are unscrambled. For extra fun and as a challenge the answers can be used to give a secret 4-digit code. Who will be the first to find this? Who will get the most cards. The activities make reading and understanding fun and the competitive element will engage students. Differentiate the memory card game by including the 4 more challenging words and definitions or play a fast game of Snap to encourage skim reading. This is a great introduction and fun task for the start of a marine life or ocean topic or if you are having a ‘Looking after our world/ environment’ day or week. This is also ideal as a stand-alone comprehension activity. SUMMER Bookmarks to Colour Encourage reading by personalizing bookmarks, get your students excited about describing their favourite book, writing a short story or poem, remembering the times tables with these easy-prep activities. Maths - stop the ‘summer slide’ by giving them a couple of times table bookmarks to color in and use for their summer reading books and times tables Reading - talk to them about books for summer holiday reading, ask them to list the titles they are planning to read. Give them blank book review bookmarks to fill in when they have read the book, bring them back after the summer holidays. Alternatively use them when they come back so they can describe their favourite summer book - an easy-prep and fun lesson. These will make a great ‘Books I read in the Summer holidays’ class display Writing - encourage students to read poems over the summer holidays and write their favourite one to remind them of good poetry. Or get them to write down great vocabulary they hear - we call them ‘WOW’ words - and bring them in after the holidays.
