A flexible Literacy lesson that uses the topic of fire to generate ideas of a poem. This is an excellent lesson for the end of a poetry topic. Children are encouraged to use their senses as well as simile and onomatopoeia to create a poem all about fire. this would fit in very well with Bonfire Night, the Stone Age, Fire of London or Halloween. Children can write their poetic phrases onto flames and build up their poem like a real bonfire. This makes for a wonderful class display. Alternatively, there is writing paper for the children to use instead.

His discoveries about light (while under house arrest for feigned madness) uncovered how light travels in a straight line and light enters the eye to create vision. A range of different activities exploring the life and work of William Beaumont and Alexis St Martin. 200 years ago St Martin was shot in the stomach while hunting animals. Most people would have died but St Martin survived and continued to live with a hole in his stomach. Beaumont ceased this opportunity to learn about the digestive system through a series of experiments. This resource will take you through the events of their story. He invented the first seismograph and developed a calendar based on the stars. He identified the Earth was spinning, the North Pole, South Pole and equater as well as longitude and latitude. Born female, James Barry is one of the first documented transgender scientist who rose the ranks of the British Army to Inspector General of Hospitals in Canada. He fought for improved sanitation and healthcare for most vulnerable and rejected members of society at the time; mentally ill, prisoners, enslaved people, soldiers’ families and lepers. Among many of his achievements was the world’s first documented caesarean section where the mother and baby both survived. His secret was never discovered until he had died and when it was the army covered up his documentation for the next 100 years. A great Scientist to study to showcase how an individual can overcome adversity. Could be taught alongside the start of the Victorian Era. Can be used at upper KS2 or lower KS3 level. Additionally, there is a spelling checklist of a shortened version of the common exception words, contractions and some suffix words. Individual checklists for pupil books allow children to identify how well they are doing and what they need to work on next.
