Born female, James Barry is one of the first documented transgender scientist who rose the ranks of the British Army to Inspector General of Hospitals in Canada. He fought for improved sanitation and healthcare for most vulnerable and rejected members of society at the time; mentally ill, prisoners, enslaved people, soldiers’ families and lepers.
