4 week English unit of work based around Stig of the Dump -years 3/4

(6)
This is a fully comprehensive 4 week English unit of work based on the book 'Stig of the Dump.' It ties in nicely with a 'stone age' topic. The focus is on diary writing and adventure stories. Both genres are clearly indicated and planning structured in such a way that clearly shows and supports progression. It covers reading, writing and speaking and listening POS from the new national curriculum (2016) - these links are shown in the medium term planning and weekly plans The planning is detailed and has learning objectives (linked to national curriculum), introductions (with materials to support), differentiated activities (with materials to support) and AFL/ plenary sessions. It also indicates where/ how activities could be done with suggestions on how to mark/assess and provides opportunities for self and peer assessment. This planning took around 20 hours to complete - so I really want to put that time to good use and be able to share this resource (and save you some time) When I planned this unit of work I used some display resources from Twinkl to accompany it and put up in the classroom which worked really well. I can not share these publically but you can access them yourself on the Twinkl website. Resources include display paper/ borders, guided reading resources and pictures of the characters. If you have any suggestions on ways to improve it, please let me know and I can add this to the resource.

Persuasive letter writing example

I couldn't find a text on line which provided the example of what I was looking for in a model persuasive letter. So I wrote one (and wish that i had done earlier as it was quicker) This is a letter to the head teacher which tries to persuade them to get rid of school uniform. It can be used as a model text to look at with the children to identify features and language. It could be used a starting letter to be up-leveled and improved We used it as the 'Imitate' text at the beginning of a T4W cycle Hope you find it useful and it saves you some time.

This is a for and against argument list for the wearing of school uniform. We were doing this as part of our T4W unit on persuasive writing. (You can also access a persuasive letter example for free in my resources) I asked the children in my class to list the pros and cons in relation to school uniform to support their persuasive letter. I got this ready to supplement any ideas they may have missed

A piece of writing which describes a beast coming to devour children in school. It uses several types of figurative language and can be used to show children how to incorporate these into their writing.

I developed this resource so that my children could fully understand what is expected of them when they are writing. They can use it to self or peer assess. It gives a breakdown of the TAFF with short explanations to remind the children what the features are. I found it better to use this from the beginning of the year to give children time to demonstrate their abilities, to give me time to collect evidence and I also use it to plug the gaps in their learning. I hope you find it as useful as i do

In this unit, the children will work have experience of the original poem and a simplified version of the story. They will complete 3 extended writing pieces (1 character description, 1 diary entry and 1 narrative) They will revise and use figurative language, modal verbs, passive voice, cohesive devises and conjunctions. They will see examples of text which have all the requirements needed to achieve EXP on the TAFF. I found this unit to be very beneficial in the run up to SATS.
