The perimeter is the total of all the side lengths of a shape added together and the area is the amount of two dimensional space a shape occupies. In this lesson, students will work on the objectives:* recognise that shapes with the same areas can have different perimeters and vice versa and recognise when it is possible to use formulae for area of shapes*.
In this lesson, students will learn how to calculate the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes, understanding how formulae can be used. They will work on finding the area of real life buildings to help put their learning into real life context during the teaching input through an engaging power point presentation.
They will then complete activity sheets which require them to find the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes through reasoning and problem solving. Three differentiated levels are provided as well as answer sheets.

In this lesson, students will work towards the objective: To identify the value of each digit in numbers given to three decimal places and multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 giving answers up to three decimal places.
They will first revisit the place value of numbers with up to 3 decimal places, looking at the value of digits and missing place values in numbers. They will then look at multiplying and dividing decimals by 10,100 and 1000: they will experiment with a place value grid looking for patterns between the numbers when multiplied or divided. A number of questions on the board will allow them to practise this skill. Finally they will complete a worksheet which challenges them to recognise patterns, answer word problems and create their own calculations for a partner. An answer sheet is provided.
