Conisbrough Castle Scheme of Work

This unit is designed to build upon the previous module by examining in depth the history of Conisbrough Castle. It will allow students to look at the strategic decisions that were taken to site the castle, its impact on the local area as well as to look in detail at how it was built and aspects of everyday medieval life. This module is also designed to fulfil the requirements of the new KS3 National Curriculum order for history by doing a depth study of an aspect of local history. However, it should be noted that all the modules that are taught at KS3 are in some way linked back to local history as well as contextualised with references to the modern world. The main resources for this module have been developed over the years by the history department in cooperation with the Mexborough Heritage Society, the Ivanhoe Trust, English Heritage and Becta. In 2001 the Virtual Tour of Conisbrough Castle was given a national teaching award by Becta for the innovative use of ICT. I have also included all the relevant lesson resources that are mentioned in the scheme of work as well as my award winning booklet on Conisbrough Castle, which has embedded a wide range of differentiated activities. My students always enjoy this module which centers on a unique grade 1 listed building which is a world heritage site. Check out the videos on You Tube of Conisbrough Castle. How did William keep control Scheme of Work with lesson resources

This unit is designed to allow students to investigate how William consolidated his control of Britain after the Norman invasion. It starts by looking at the 'Harrying of the North' by William and how he ruthlessness wiped out all opposition to his rule. The second unit looks at how he rewarded his supporters and tightened his control by introducing the Feudal System. Whilst studying this unit it is important to emphases the importance of doing 'homage' and taking the 'oath of allegiance' as William placed considerable importance on this aspect. His key justification for the Norman invasion was his claim that King Harold was an oath breaker and that his victory was a vindication of the just by God. The fourth unit looks at the Domesday Book and how land and wealth was distributed. Please make sure you point how to your students how much land and wealth was given to the Church as the Pope had supported his invasion. The final two units look at the roles played by different types of castles in helping William consulate his control. This resource is best used alongside the Heinemann History series which is referred to in the scheme of work. It represents excellent value as I have included all the relevant lesson resources along with two literacy mats to help students write a persuasive letter to their local Lord explaining why they should replace the Motte and Bailey Castle with a Square Keep Castle. This work makes an excellent display and assessment work, especially if students age their work with tea bags or coffee. All my students have thoroughly enjoyed this scheme of work as it lends itself to memorable educational moments that will last them a lifetime. Kind Regards Roy

This excellent resource can used to suit a range of learners both in lower and upper school. Dingbats make an excellent starter, mini plenary or plenary to help spice up the learning and help students learn important key words, concepts and facts through a series of card games. I usually get my students to play one of the following games: Game 1: Read out the key words until your partner or group have guessed the topic at the top of the card. Game 2: Try and describe the topic without using the key words until your partner has correctly guessed the topic. Game 3: Describe the topic using Pictionary Game 4: Describe the topic using charades I usually add an element of competition by getting my students to keep a score of how well they have done in the back of their books. You’d be amazed at seriously they take the competitive element, but this all helps to serve the greater good by engraining the key words and concepts that they need to learn for this topic. Another great way of using this resource is to give out one card and ask individuals or groups to prepare a discussion or a talk for 4 minutes on the topic card. Again this helps to improve their speaking and listen skills and by default their ability to write about the topic. Card Sort / Continuum: How successful was the Weimar Republic 1923 - 1929?

This great little resource is designed to help students assess how successful were the polices of the Weimar Republic from 1923 - 1929. The resource includes two tasks. The first task is a simple card sort where students have to sort 16 cards under two headings, success and failure. The second task, then gets the students to decide how far each factor or card was a success or failure by placing them onto a living graph or continuum. The first task is designed for lower and middle ability students, whilst the second is designed to provide stretch and challenge for middle to upper ability students. I would recommend printing the living graph / continuum on page 2 onto an A3 sheet, but you could get your students to draw one across two pages in their exercise books, The resource is provided in word so it can be easily adapted for your students. The aims and objectives are: Theme: Weimar Republic 1919 - 1932 Know: What steps did the Weimar Republic take to solve Germany's problems 1923 - 1929? Understand: How successful were each of these policies at helping Germany to recover? Evaluate: How far did Germany recover as a result of these policies from 1923 - 1929? WILF - What Am I Looking For? Identify and describe: What action the Weimar Republic took to solve Germany's problems? Explain: How successful some of these policies were? Analyse: Come to an overall judgement on 'how far' these policies helped Germany to recover? Anyway, have fun with these resources , I look forward to your feedback. This great resource is designed to be used as a starter or plenary for students looking at the aims and ideas of Hitler and his Nazi Party in 1933. Its designed to be a quick 10 or 15 minute activity and would be suitable for lower school students studying this topic or foundation students at GCSE or upper school. Students are given eight headings cards which include Jews, education, opposition, economy, Treaty of Versailles, women, dictatorship and race as well as eight information cards which they need to cut out and match out. This tried and tested card sort looks at the controversial topic of General Haig's leadership during the Battle of the Somme. Students are given two heading cards labelled 'Butcher of the Somme' and the 'Man who won the war.' However, depending upon how you decide to use them you could change them to 'evidence for and 'evidence against' as the document is in word. In addition to the headings cards, students are given 14 statements to sort through. These are based on the latest research on the topic. This activity is suitable for a wide range of learners and could be used as the basis of an assessment task or extended writing activity. Aims & Objectives Theme: Why was there a stalemate on the Western Front? Know: What tactics did General Haig use at the Battle of the Somme in 1916? Understand: Why did the Battle of the Somme end in a stalemate? Evaluate: Was General Haig the 'Butcher of the Somme? WILF: What Am I Looking For? Identify and describe- What happened during the Battle of the Somme in 1916? Explain - Why did Haig's tactics fail to achieve a breakthrough? Analyse - How far was Haig's responsible for the failure to break through in 1916? Professional Knowledge For those of you who are new to the profession, this topic is controversial for a number of reasons. Firstly, the leadership of the British Army during the war is traditionally described by some historians as 'lions led by donkeys.' Please note that this interpretation first grew out a dissatisfaction with the Treaty of Versailles and the concept that the First World War would be the 'War to end all wars' in the 1930's. Clearly by then, many of the sacrifices appeared to have been in vain with the rise of Hitler and the threat of war. However, in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, Haig was seen as a hero. He was also the man who set up the Royal British Legion and began the first poppy appeal. Secondly, this topic is controversial for many of our Australian cousins whose sense of national identity grew out of their frustration and anger over the disaster at Gallipoli. This has led to feeling that the British tactics were a complete failure in all theatres of war and has led to the writing of some pretty bad popular history by Australian tour guides like John Laffin in his book ‘British Butchers and Bunglers of WW1' to almost justify the Republican Movement in Australia. History as always is controversial. Historians create a hierarchy of facts to suit their own interpretations. This exercise gets students to have a go at creating their own! I have also created a PowerPoint to accompany this topic, which can be downloaded separately or as part of a discounted package. Kind Regards Roy
