Of Mice and Men - Characterisation of Lennie
This informative and engaging lesson aims to improve students’ knowledge and understanding of the character of Lennie in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. It also aims to improve their analytical skills, so that they can demonstrate sustained and sophisticated interpretations of the character.
This pack includes the full lesson presentation, with animations and key information, a worksheet with clear and concise instructions, an example analysis extract, and full teacher guidance. The learning journey is clear and progressive, following a pathway of progressively more difficult tasks, including:
- An engaging memory game task to recognise and remember items and ideas that are related to the character of Lennie;
- A worksheet that enables students to demonstrate understanding of key quotations about Lennie, and to link Lennie to key themes and ideas.
- Close reading of a modelled example analysis paragraph;
- Joint creation of an analysis success criteria;
- An opportunity to answer an exam style question based upon the character of Lennie;
- A chance to peer assess against the success criteria.
Students should have read, (or during this lesson read) up to the section in which George and Lennie meet their new boss, in order to fully access the lesson.

Amazon Rainforest Information Sheet (Physical and Human Geography)
A simple information sheet detailing some of the main physical and human geography features of the Amazon Rainforest.
I have used this in the past with KS2/ KS3 students as a part of a geography topic on rainforests, and also as a non-fiction whole class reading stimulus.

Based on the popular game show ‘Pointless’, this resource is perfect for use as a whole lesson resource, enrichment option, or revision tool. Editable, so that you can change to any other topic or change questions. (I’ve also added a blank template so that you can make your own games from scratch). Containing almost 30 slides of sound clips, interesting tasks, and suitably challenging questions, this resource is effective at both promoting engagement and enhancing learning. There are several full rounds of questions to build or revisit knowledge of characters, plot, and themes in ‘Stone Cold.’

Kensuke's Kingdom - Whole Class Reading Session!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills through a reading of the opening chapter of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom.’
The resource pack includes the extract and all of the activities for the session, which the class are guided through via a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities.
The session is best suited for children in Year 5 and 6, but it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. The session is also suitable for home/ remote learning.

This 16-page resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Simon Armitage’s 9/11 poem ‘Out of the Blue.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful throughout teaching, or for exam revision or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of students towards meeting the key English Literature assessment objectives - suitable for all examining bodies. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and it is clearly highlighted within each task regarding which assessment strands the task is designed to demonstrate.

This detailed and visually-appealing resource offers a complete reference point for students learning or revising Clive King’s ‘Stig of the Dump.’ It contains comprehensive sections on:

Spring - William Blake - KS2 Reading Comprehension Lesson!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills through reading William Blake’s 'Spring.’
The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop comprehension skills through VIPERS activities: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, and summarising. It also contains a vocabulary check and key contextual information to clarify any unfamiliar language and subject matter.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The extract needed is provided in both Word and PDF, and I’ve also a link to a web-based version of the poem on the first slide.
The session is tried and tested, and was initially delivered to children in years 4-5, however with only minor adaptations it would be accessible to slightly older and younger children.
The March Equinox - Whole Class Reading Lesson!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills through finding out more about the March Equinox. The non-fiction text that they read is adapted from a Reader’s Digest article which explains the equinox and shares some of the myths and traditions surrounding it.
The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s VIPERS skills: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, sequencing and summarising. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language.

Pigeon English - Lessons 5 and 6 - 'May'
This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of the third chapter (‘May’) of Stephen Kelman’s 'Pigeon English.’ In this section of the text, the Dell Farm Crew begin to turn on Harri, Miquita assaults Lydia with an iron, and Harri’s relationship with Poppy flourishes.
The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through:
-Retrieving and inferring information;
-Explaining key plot events;
-Analysing characters and relationships.
The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities. A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning.
There’s a lot of content in the resource (19 slides in total) and in the past I have utilised this material over two or even three lessons. The lessons are best suited to students in KS4, and develop students’ knowledge and skills in relation to a number of GCSE assessment objectives.
