History
History of Toys - Whole Class Reading Session!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills, whilst simultaneously building their understanding of toys over time.
It contains an original text and the step-by-step PowerPoint presentation leading teachers and learners through the post-reading activities.
The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities.
The session is best suited for children in years 1-2, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.

Kamikaze - Beatrice Garland - Comprehension Activities Booklet!
This 16-page resource booklet contains a wide range of challenging and engaging comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Beatrice Garland’s power and conflict poem 'Kamikaze.’ Teachers have found the activities particularly useful throughout teaching, or for exam revision or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of students towards meeting the key English Literature assessment objectives - suitable for all examining bodies. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and it is clearly highlighted within each task regarding which assessment strands the task is designed to demonstrate.
It is provided in both Word (to allow for easy editing) and PDF (to ensure for consistency of formatting between computers).
Activities within the booklet include (amongst many others):
‘Analysing Context’ - helping students to ‘Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.’

The Diary of Anne Frank - The Inhabitants of the Annex
This engaging and informative lesson helps students to understand the key characters and relationships in the secret annex in Anne Frank’s Diary. Students explore extracts from the text, video evidence, and their own research findings, to demonstrate a clear understanding of each of the occupants’ key characteristics and traits, in addition to their relationships with Anne and one another.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
-Remembering each of the occupants of the house, and recalling what they know about them;
- Reading and understanding extracts from Anne Frank's Diary, in which Anne describes each of the people in the house and explains what she thinks of them;
- Watching and comprehending a powerful video of Otto Frank discussing his relationship with Anne;
- Researching one inhabitant in more depth, using a helpful research template;
- Writing an explanatory piece about the life of one of the inhabitants of the annex;
- Peer assessing each other's learning attempts.

I originally used these resources with a mixed-ability year 8 class, however colleagues have used them for between years 5 and 9 with minimal adaptations. Please note that internet access/ use of research mechanisms is required for the introduction task and the model examples.

The Romans - Introduction to the Romans - Lesson!
In this engaging lesson, children are provided with an introductory understanding of the Romans, through:
-learning who the Romans were and when they lived;
-understanding the different periods of the Roman era;
-remembering and sequencing important Roman dates.
The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey:
-Knowledge harvesting - gauging what children already know about the Romans, and gathering what else they would like to know;
-Answering recall questions based upon the areas of history that they have learnt previously that are pertinent to this topic;
-Gathering base information about the Romans through information on the slide show and through watching a short, informative video, including when and where they lived, how they operated and the different Roman eras;
-Gaining an understanding about how the Roman empire spread;
-Following clear instructions and precise dates to create their own timeline of key Roman events;
-Completing plenary activities to demonstrate their understanding of each of the concepts learnt in the lesson;
-Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have met the learning objective.
Included is the comprehensive PowerPoint presentation (20 slides), which contains all of the information needed to teach the lesson.
In the past, I have used this lesson with children in lower KS2 (years 3 and 4) - the key learning is aligned with curriculum expectations for history. All images are licensed for commercial use.

The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The text has been adapted from a web source to ensure that it is clear and age-appropriate. It is provided in both PDF and Word, so that you can make any additional alterations should you wish to.
