In this engaging and purposeful lesson, children develop an understanding of who Christopher Columbus was and the impact that he had on the world: In particular, they: -Learn who Christopher Columbus was and what he is known for; -Explain how Columbus’ voyages have impacted the world today; -Evaluate the actions and behaviour of Christopher Columbus. The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey: -Knowledge recall of basic history skills, key terms, and the meaning of exploration; -Watching an engaging video (hyperlinked) to gain a base understanding of his life, voyages and achievements; -Answer comprehension questions demonstrating what they have learnt from the video; -Exploring quotations from Columbus’ own account of his voyages, to discover how he mistreated native people in the lands that he explored; -Evaluating Columbus’ impact on the world; -Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have met the learning objective. Included is the comprehensive PowerPoint presentation (18 slides), which contains all of the information needed to teach the lesson. Also included are the quotations for the development task - in both Word and PDF format. It was originally designed for year 5/6 classes as an end of term activity, but may also be suitable for knowledge recall or retrieval practice activities throughout KS2. Questions are split into 6 rounds of 10 questions each. To add variety and promote engagement, there are a range of regular, finish the sentence, and picture questions. The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey: -Knowledge recall - gauging what children already know about the Anglo-Saxon era (answers are provided); -Understanding that Britain was split into Kingdoms under the Anglo-Saxons, and that these gradually unified over time to create England; -Researching and learning about the three Kings - Egbert, Alfred the Great and Athelstan - who were each important in this transition towards unification; -Learning about the social structure of Anglo-Saxon life under the King, and considering how life differed at each level of the hierarchy; -Reflecting on what life was like for different people within Anglo-Saxon society; -Comparing Anglo-Saxon society with the societal structure of modern Britain; -Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have met the learning objective. This lesson aims to help students to write descriptively, using a range of descriptive writing techniques. Students also learn how to incorporate the five senses into their writing. Furthermore, students explore social and moral issues such as 'swimming against the tide' and 'being different,' through the story of Oskar Schindler. Informative and engaging, this lesson follows a clear and logical learning journey. Students learn to: - Define the key term 'humane' - Understand the story of Oskar Schindler, and consider the social and moral dilemmas that he faced; - Consider decisions that they have had to make which contrast to popular opinion; - Remember the five senses, and discuss why they are important to descriptive writing; - Use the five senses to create descriptive sentences based on scenes from Schindler's List; - Write a descriptive piece about a difficult decision that they have had to make; - Peer-assess each others' learning attempts. Resources included are: A whole-lesson PowerPoint, that guides the teacher and learners throughout the entire lesson, an engaging worksheet, a writing to describe help-sheet, and a teacher guidance sheet. Note: I'm aware that this is a 15 film - however the clips that I have selected are not amongst the most graphic, and so I feel that the lesson can be used with students younger than 15.
