SIMPLIFYING RATIOS: WHOLE NUMBERS

(0)
With this resource, your students will be able to simplify whole number ratios, find the highest common factor (HCF), formulate equivalent ratios and identify a pattern in a given set of ratios. SECTIONS INCLUDED: * Booklet Cover with a quote by Hans Hoffman * Study note on Simplifying Ratios * Simplifying whole-number ratios by finding the highest common factor (HCF) – ‘work with the teacher’ sheets and ‘work on your own’ sheets * Simplifying whole-number ratios (math LIB) Recording Sheet. * Simplifying whole-number ratios (math LIB) 10 Task Cards. (2 on a page) colour and Blackline * Simplifying whole-number ratios (math LIB) 10 blackline Task Cards on a single page for students to glue in their notebooks as reference. ADDITIONAL: *Answer Key included *MATH LIB ACTIVITY My students really enjoyed this activity – I’m sure your students will too! I cut out and laminated the ten task cards. I then tacked them to the wall with Blu-Tack. (this way cards don’t get lost if they were left on students’ desks – it also gets students up and moving), Students then write the ratio to solve on their recording sheet, simplify it and look for their answer from the list of options. They write the word against the selected option in the ‘fill in the blanks’ section. The end result is a silly message. You will find that this is a far more interesting way of answering a multiple-choice question and checking students’ answers. The activity sets up all students for success – you will notice that the answer to card 10 is quite obvious. The other cards also target differentiation.

They will need a QR Code Scanner to do this. You may download i-nigma for free. Place the QR Code Cards around the classroom for added fun. This activity allows for movement and builds student enthusiasm. 24 COLOUR AND BLACKLINE TASK CARDS WHAT’S INCLUDED: ♦ Problem Cards 1-4: Simplifying Ratios Whole Numbers (with two given subjects) ♦ Problem Cards 5-8: Simplifying Ratios Whole Numbers (with three given subjects) ♦ Problem Cards 9-12: Simplifying Ratios (Fractions) ♦ Problem Cards 13-16: Solving (cooking) problems involving cross-multiplication ♦ Problem Cards 17-20: Solving problems where the total amount is given and students use the method of cross-multiplication to find one part of the amount. ♦ Problem Cards 21-24: Solving problems where one part of the total amount is given and students have to find the other part of the amount on the basis of a given ratio. SUGGESTED USE: Prior to have students using the task cards, I familiarise them with the type of problems and method of solving. There are 4 problems for each problem type. For example, cards 1-4 feature the same method of problem solving. I demonstrate the method of working out each problem type on the board. I generally use cards 1, 5, 11, 13, 17 and 20 that feature all six types. After instruction, the cards are taped to the classroom walls. I place similar problem types together. Students walk around and solve. This alleviates the monotony of sitting in one place and solving. Once all students have solved the 24 problems, we discuss the answers as a class. You may project the answer key on the whiteboard and explain steps involved in problem solving. I have students glue the blackline version of the 24 task cards (on 2 sheets) in their notebooks as reference when discussing answers.
