This lesson draws on a wide variety of teaching strategies to engage and focus students with how to analyse poetry. These skills in turn can be used for analysing Unseen Poetry. This lesson is fully differentiated, from learning objectives, to tasks and to outcome plenary. This lesson should take between 2-3 hours to teach and includes a task that crosses over into Imaginative Writing for the Language Paper. I have taught this lesson a number of times and my students always enjoy the ‘finding the answer’ style of this lesson a lot of fun! A study of Act 5 of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'. This is designed for GCSE teaching and includes a range of activities to engage students. The lesson also includes slides on structural devices used within the play (as a key component to achieving a grade 5 or above) and whole text revision activities at the end of the powerpoint.

With a distinct lack of exemplar papers available for the new Edexcel (9-1) GCSE English Language Exams I have constructed some papers and included mark schemes and indicative content as guidance. This resource introduces students to a range of language and structural devices required in their Edexcel IGCSE examination, however, this resource is also suited for any teachers looking for an extract on which to practise these skills. Learning is scaffolded through analysis of short phrases and sections from the whole extract to enable students to feel secure in their GCSE level analysis. This resource includes a powerpoint and a homework task so that learning can go beyond the classroom. The tasks are designed so that students gain confidence before attempting individual tasks and the lesson includes talk time and time when students can annotate the text on the whiteboard if you have this facility. My students find these resources hugely helpful in accessing higher grades and have historically done very well in their final exams, approaching them with confidence and a wide range of understanding in regard to methods used. Students are continually prompted to update their records and recall methods to help embed this information in their long term memory. This is a lesson that can be used as a stand alone lesson or built into a unit on Dystopian Fiction that covers the skills required to access the (9-1) strengthened GCSE Non Fiction Reading Paper. The lesson works slowly through each question type offering tips and guidance on how to access secure grades at GCSE level. Two non fiction articles are included.
