This is a game that can be used to practice basic four rules number skills ( + - x ÷). The numbers can be changed to vary the difficulty and the time taken before each tile ‘falls’ can be varied. After each set of 10 correct answers the game gets a little quicker. The high score is kept and that can be very motivating with a group of students…who comes top!
Simple choose your parameters using the spinner button, press the start button and input the answers to each sum at the bottom of the column to ‘zap’ the column. If the sums reach the bottom of the column before you answer them…then it’s game over!

Plan a holiday
This is a series of lessons designed to be a numeracy rich task investigating the planning of a holiday.
There is a workbook and an interactive EXCEL sheet with randomised values to ensure all students get a different workbook if required.

• 5 ‘Bell work’ tasks. These are to be projected on the whiteboard as the class comes in or for the ‘card sort’ (Bellwork 4 and 5) printed out on put on the desks. The idea is pupils have something to get on with related to the learning objectives while everyone gets in and is settled. (It also gives the member of staff time to take the register.
• 7 Starter activities on basic addition and subtraction. If these are completed on a PC / Laptop / Tablet then the sheets self mark…always a good idea I find!
• 3 ‘Find the next terms in the number pattern’ examples that can be used as a whiteboard projector resource or a help-station activity for pupils who struggle with the concept. They get progressively more difficult from Ex 1 to Ex 3 (Generator an+b Ex 1 positive a & b, Ex2 positive a and ±b, Ex 3 ±a and ±b)
• 6 ‘Find the next terms in the number pattern’ exercises that self mark. They get progressively more difficult from Ex 1a to Ex 3b the a exercises are find the next 2 terms and the b exercises are find the terms in the gaps (Generator an+b Ex 1 positive a & b, Ex2 positive a and ±b, Ex 3 ±a and ±b)
• There is a mini-plenary that is a number square that gives you a starting term and second term and challenges you to find the next 10 in the number sequence. As yet it’s not self marking…I’m working on that!

A set of maths starter and worksheet resources linked to straight line graphs that will ask students to:
* State the coordinates of a point,
* Plot a point given a coordinate pair,
* Plot a given vertical or horizontal line,
* State the equation of a given horizontal or vertical line
The coordinates and lines are randomised between -5 and +5 for the starters and -10 and +10 for the worksheets. There is a timer countdown that can be changed depending on how much time you think the students need. This is best used with a set of mini-whiteboards (ones with axes or a lined grid on are best).
The resources use VBA code behind the scenes to make it work so you will have to 'enable macros' when prompted by Excel. It has been written using Excel 2013.
The Average Smarties Investigation
This is a user guide to creating a spreadsheet that calculates averages (mean, median and mode) and then gets pupils to think about why certain things happen with averages. During the process students also learn some formatting techniques on EXCEL.
This resource can be used from a Mathematics point of view to look at averages or an ICT point of view to look at formulae use and modelling in spreadsheets

Trial and Improvement Sheets in EXCEL
There are 11 EXCEL sheets that provide:
• One starter on rounding to decimal places. This is a self marking randomly generated sheet so all students would have their own individual questions.
• 10 x Trial and improvement sheets that are differentiated. All sheets are self marking and there is a summary sheet at the start of the pack.
These can be used by projecting onto a class whiteboard but is best used in a computer room or using a set of laptops / tablets with EXCEL on.
