This poetry scrapbook is the perfect way to get your class exploring the outdoors while letting their creative juices flow in the form of poetry. They each get their own personal scrapbook where they are required to think about what language they can use to describe specific things before putting their thoughts into a poem. This scrapbook gives the children the opportunity to write acrostic, quatrain, and couplet poems along with another, which they can choose. I have used this pack with great success in spring and summer where we would spend Friday afternoons going out to write poetry, however I am excited to have a go at it in winter too! It is very therapeutic for both the children and the teacher. Science Murder Mysteries are great fun for both you and the students. For this mystery students will use their knowledge of materials and their properties as well as their states of matter knowledge to investigate who poisoned Andrew Smith. They’ll look at the 5 suspects poisons both using their eyes and under a microscope and compare the poisons to the one found at the crime scene. They’ll have to figure out how to separate the substances in the water (salt, sugar, etc.) to take a closer look and make their comparisons to figure out which suspect to put in jail! Using a ruler, meter stick, trundle wheel, tape measure, or other measuring tool get your class to measure and record different items in your outdoor space. It can be useful to give clear demonstrations as to how to use the different equipment. This activity can be further differentiated by allowing students to use a variety of equipment as well as asking them to measure to a greater level of accuracy. This activity will help reinforce students’ understanding of place value as they sort numbers on a number line in a fun and practical way. The pack contains two number lines and sets of number cards, one with numbers from 1 – 10 and another from 1 – 100. Set up: Print out the number line cards and number cards (laminate if possible so they can be re-used). Create the number line by sticking / tying the number line cards to something (a fence, the floor, trees, etc.). Try to make the scales as accurate as possible. Teaching structure: Give each child a number card and get them to run to the correct place on the numbers line. Once all students are in the correct place, get them muddle up, swap cards with somebody, then find the correct place on the number line. You can do this several times, giving students lots of practise at finding numbers on a number line. This activity is great both as a whole class and with smaller groups. Our Senses - The Smell Hunt: Outdoor Science Activity

The smell hunt is a great activity to get students exploring the wonderful smells nature has to offer. It’s perfect if you’re looking at our senses as part of the human body topic or descriptive writing and adjectives. Students will find and crush the leaves of plants or trees before letting their partner smell the leaves without letting them see them. Their partner must then see if they can find the same leaves based on what they smelt. For higher grade levels you can use small pots for them to collect and store the leaves in as well as completing the record sheet before swapping sheets with their partner. This resource contains optional differentiated activities sheets that can be used to support this activity and provide good curricular links. **Record sheet: **These sheets can be used for students to record the leaves they’ve collected and think of some adjectives to describe the different smells. Evaluation: These sheets get students to think of the science behind smells, diving deeper into how we smell the crushed leaves and why things have particular smells.
