Writing the perfect essay - introductions and conclusions. GCSE English Literature preparation

(18)
This is a short powerpoint guiding students through extended reading responses in English, showing them the core ingredients of good introductions and conlusions, whilst also providing modelled examples of effective and ineffective essay style. This is useful in the run up to mock or final examinations, as students often don't know how to start or end their essays in the most effective way. The examples provided relate to Shakespeare's Macbeth, but the activities could relate to any of the set texts they are likely to encounter in GCSE English literature. Feedback welcomed and appreciated.

An Inspector Calls GCSE Context Posters

(5)
A collection of detailed and visually appealing posters exploring the context of An Inspector Calls in relation to when the play was set. These are great to have as a classroom display in your room. Similarly, these can be used as part of a marketplace activity whereby students learn about various contextual factors during a lesson. Rather than focus on specific contextual facts, I’ve broken context down into key themes, that way students can make more effective links between social/historical context and the play itself. Ideal for helping students to understand and embed AO3 into their analysis. If you liked the resources it’d be great if you could leave a review. For a range of high quality English and Drama resources from a current lead practitioner and AQA examiner, don’t forget to check out my shop!

English Display Materials - PEEZL

(3)
Create an informative and visually engaging display with these ‘responding to a text’ materials. Ideal for Key Stages 3 and 4 There are lost of acronyms out there when responding to a text. PEEZL is an ideal middle ground between the more simple PEE model and some of the ridiculously complicated ones that seem to be around these days! Each part of PEEZL is broken down with a pupil-friendly definition alongside two worked examples. Image depicts what the finished display could look like (although I’m guessing you’ll be better at lining up the letters than me!) All the slides are fully editable and adaptable, so can be changed to suit your needs. When you’re ready to print them off, simply opt for the ‘print full page slides’ option on your settings and the resources will print as displayed. Feedback welcomed and appreciated!
English Report Writing Comment Bank
ajs12345ajs12345

English Report Writing Comment Bank

(2)
A comprehensive set of documents which aid with the writing of reports, hopefully providing you with the tools you need to write fair, honest and balanced reports for English. The comment bank covers the following areas (as you can see from the preview there are documents for each): Introductory comments/learning cognition and progress Topics Covered Behaviour and Attitude (with targets) Reading/comprehension (and targets) Writing skills (and targets) The resources are suited to secondary Key Stages 3 and 4. Most of the comments simply require you to add a student’s name or to write their specific gender in the space provided. I’m sure these will save you a good deal of time and effort, and help bring a little inspiration to the baleful process of report writing!
Commas - Punctuation and SPaG lesson

Commas - Punctuation and SPaG lesson

(2)
Also available as a great value scheme of work here! If you are anything like me, you probably realise that just because students get into KS3 (and even KS4), it doesn’t automatically mean they know how to use punctuation properly, especially commas. This is a complete PowerPoint of thoroughly planned lessons which are designed to allow students to truly master the comma and its complex uses. The activities are lively and engaging, and the PowerPoint has a fun and relevant feel to it (using memes, cracking jokes etc) so that the idea of learning about commas (again) doesn’t feel childish or lame to them. As a minimum, you have 2 lessons worth of work here, closer to 4 if you decide to do the writing tasks thoroughly. To accompany the PowerPoint, there are two worksheets which tie in nicely to the PowerPoint and allow students to put into practice what they are being taught. I’m guessing this is probably going to suit lower to middle ability students: those on the border who tend to really struggle with SPaG and literacy. That said, I’ve often found it necessary to do the 2nd lesson (on subordinate clauses and very complex sentences) with my top sets too. Absolutely ready to roll and fully resourced. Very little adaptation or tweaking required as scaffolding and extension tasks are built in. Enjoy! If you loved the resource and think it’s worth 5 stars, why not get another one absolutely free? English Assessment Feedback Sheets - reading and writing
ajs12345ajs12345

English Assessment Feedback Sheets - reading and writing

(1)
These feedback sheets dramatically reduce marking workload and get students taking more ownership of their work and actually acting on feedback. I introduced these into my department a while back. As a result, markloads have reduced and students are much more responsive to feedback and much more accountable for the improvements that they make. The only writing you need to do is to input levels and to write in a WWW. The rest is taken care of as all you need to do is highlight the applicable statements Sheets are for KS4 but could easily be adapted to suit KS3 and are easy to tweak. I've adapted many of the targets and areas for improvement from the AQA English language and literature mark schemes They've worked like an absolute dream, saved me loads of time and Ofsted really liked how they worked across the whole department and got students more invested in making improvements. Only minor tweaks would be needed for these to work with pretty much any assessment you might be doing. If you make a purchase and find the resource useful, why not get another one absolutely free? GCSE English Language Paper 1. Proof Reading Worksheets.
ajs12345ajs12345

GCSE English Language Paper 1. Proof Reading Worksheets.

(1)
A series of paper 1 style exemplars that students must punctuate correctly. Ideal preparation work in the run up to exams as it models good examples of creative writing whilst promoting proof reading and active reading strategies that will boost their AO6 SPaG mark. They are all reasonably challenging, and are designed for Level 5 and above (C and above) students. I find that they serve 2 purposes: they keep a student's proof reading skills sharp (essential, in my view, to get a good mark on the SPaG component of the writing task) whilst also modelling strong creative writing skills (I often use these activities as a foundation for detailed discussions about the strengths and weaknesses of the writing). I have found, particularly with top sets, that modelling the style of the writing in this way dramatically improves the content and sophistication of their creative writing. Useful, no fuss worksheets that you can just print off and use straight away. Ideal bit of revision and skills building for the Section B writing section of the new specification GCSE language paper. Semi colon - Punctuation and SPaG lesson

Semi colon - Punctuation and SPaG lesson

(1)
This is a fully resourced lesson about using semicolons/semi colons. This is also available as part of a Punctuation and SPaG scheme of work here. Ideal for KS3 and KS4 students with a fun and light-hearted feel. Could also be taught to higher ability KS2 students. Would suit a range of abilities as there is lots of scope for stretch and challenge, with ambitious success criteria and extension tasks built in throughout. Scaffolding and differentiation options are built in where appropriate. Fully resourced and ready to roll, minimal adaptation or tweaking required. This is obviously a SPaG/Punctuation lesson, but it is equally focused on creative/descriptive writing too. Much of the content is therefore ideal for teaching general creative writing skills or preparing for the fiction writing task on the new specification GCSE English exam. I have used the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus as stimulus material for the tasks (which has proved popular with those I’ve taught). There’s at least a lesson’s work here; it usuallytakes a couple of lessons to get through all the content due to the detailed and structured nature of the writing task.
